In July 1776 Putnam and Bushnell tested a home made submarine torpedo to blow up British ships near Staten Island. Sergeant Longknife, nicknamed Bige, manned the device but tobacco delay and mechanical fault doomed the mission. The venture ended with the craft lost and no damage caused.
