In a reminiscence of 1846 county life the piece recalls a wedding between a enslaved woman and a white planter driven by fears of a slave uprising. A posse led by Sheriff and a tense night ride formed to suppress the event, amid rumors of insurrection and demands for freedom.
Charles E. Morris, an expert accountant, completed work for the Missouri state auditor and his findings, prepared in New York, will be filed with Auditor Albert O. Allen. Morris claims no irregularities in Missouri funds, contradicting rumors spread by the Globe-Democrat, and notes his firm employs about 125 people. Local society notes mention Mrs. M. K. Oliver, Joan Dyer, and others visiting Kansas City, with various residents traveling to and from Higginsville and Independence.
County court adjourned after a three day session approving road and bridge work. Road money was apportioned to districts, with repairs planned on bridges near Bates City and Johnson Lafayette lines. Jurors for December drawn, tax abatements approved, and various settlements and appointments enacted.
