The crop report notes April hindered farm work with soils too wet and cold slowing growth. Only 27 percent of crop planted by May 1, down from 68 percent last year, with frost in late April and early May causing damage. Wheat and oats outlooks weaken, apples damaged by frost, and early gardens show injury. Tax and local finance items follow in the notice.
The Palace of Fine Arts on Art Hill will not be in the main picture of the Exposition view. The county court opened the Wellington road project after multiple surveys and petitions. The chosen route adds little new road, includes a small culvert, and minimal grading with a projected damages estimate of 270 dollars for widening two miles of adjacent road. The new road will extend about a mile and a half beyond the old path from Wellington toward the Little Soli bridge area.
Henry Erdman of Alma, thirty, unmarried and employed in hardware, was killed last Sunday when his horse stumbled and threw him. He walked home but died shortly after. The Erdman family, prominent in the county, mourns a man of high character.
W B Nicholson who has been with Swift and Co of Kansas City for two years has resigned his position and is at home. He will probably go to Pittsburg Pa with his sister Mrs Joho C Yates who will arrive the first of next week to visit her parents Mr and Mrs E F Nicholson.
Telegram from Higginsville reports Theodore Young killed by lightning in New Mexico with no further details. Dill pickles advertised at J F Winn's.
Governor Van Sant personally intervened at the Minnesota state capitol to halt a bid by lawmakers to loot the house of representatives chamber. After attempts by two members to carry away desks and furniture, a later incident led to a tussle as three more members moved desks to the corridor before the governor ordered doors locked and the furniture secured in his private office.
Fifty years ago the Lexington Express notes Lafayette county will be represented at the New York World’s Fair with 5000 exhibitors. A hemp rope coil by J. M. McGrew Co. is praised for superior fiber and workmanship and expected to gain notoriety for Lexington minting hope of favorable reports and eastern city attention.
