Cuba Railways a Snapshot of Cuban Transport History

Cuba operates 14 railways with over 2000 miles of track. Rates vary with some lines charging 12 cents per mile and others lower for first and second class passengers. Much of the system is private, built to move sugar cane, with British capital in control of five major lines. American occupation spurred new lines, notably the Cuban Central railway led by Sir William Van Horne, linking Havana to Cienfuegos and Santa Clara, aiming to unlock Nipe harbor and cultivate an estimated 10,000,000 acres.
