Washington June 1 The annual readjustment of postmasters salaries is complete effective July 1 One thousand seven hundred seventy postmasters will receive higher pay 289 will see reduced compensation Total reductions amount to 28400 while aggregate increases total 215600 yielding a net rise of 187200 The average postmaster salary rises to 1777 up from 1734 last year and the current improvement surpasses all years since 1884 except 1900.
Sixteen finishing department workers at Horton Bros shoe factory in Kansas City go on strike after management shifts finishers to piece work, causing daily earnings of 1.50 to 2.50. The dispute centers on the new wage schedule and a prompt walkout. On the same date in Boston a YMCA convention session featured Cephas Brainerd of New York discussing the fundamental principles of the YMCA, with a statistics heavy review and a business meeting following.

The Virginia constitutional convention elected John Goode as president. In his acceptance speech he urged restricting negro suffrage and the body decided no oath would be required to hold office. Some members said they would resign rather than be sworn in.
The Sedalia convention elected J. B. Jones of Fulton as president and L. C. Cupp of Huntsville as secretary. Maryville won the 1902 convention. A resolution praised the temperance drive under the fearless leadership of Mrs. Carrie Nation of Kansas.
Parsons Kun reports that Congregational Presbyterian Baptist and Christian churches hold Sunday night union services in Forrest Park with ministers alternating in preaching.
