William Devlin, injured Wednesday afternoon December 2 at the South mine when Otto Dierking was killed, died Monday night about 6:15. He was in serious condition from the start with no chance of recovery. Survived by mother Mrs. Mary Devlin, sister Esther, and brothers Arthur and John, all residing near Summit Mine. Funeral Thursday at 2:30 from the Catholic church with Rev. Geo B. Curry presiding.

Capt. KE A. Hickman, long with the United States Signal Service in Washington D C, is transferred to Texas City. He and his family are visiting Independence with his parents, Mr and Mrs W Z Hickman, before his duties begin in Texas City.

The College of Agriculture at Columbia offers a seven week Poultry course starting January 4 and ending February 20 to teach practical poultry-raising. Dr. £.C. Weust of this city and Miss Cora Weisenborn of St Joseph Mo were married at the bride’s home in St Joseph December 2. Dr Weust, a veterinary surgeon here since last spring, has made many friends who extend congratulations and best wishes.

In the criminal court Judge Rich Monday overruled the motion for a new trial for Mariane Cariou who was recently convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. She cannot post bond pending a Supreme Court appeal as the grand jury was charged that morning. The jury pool listed includes eight named men from the area. Local residents Mrs A M Walton and Miss Tillie Hollis moved among visitors, with several others traveling to Kansas City for meetings and visits. A marriage license was issued to John H Rieth and Emma Pragman Abha and Mrs D H Craig and daughter Miss Rose of Salida Colorado and Mrs M L Cooley of Las Vegas NM visited before returning home. Additional local movements include Mrs T W Wilkerson and Mrs Harry Caldwell visiting Kansas City and Miss Ruth Field arriving for a visit. Mrs Ben Steel also planned a brief Kansas City trip.
