Newspapers in Virginia shrink as small papers persist
The 1908 census advance bulletin shows Virginia had about 20 percent fewer newspapers than a decade earlier. Daily papers fell from 37 in 1899 to 32 in 1908, with some closures since 1909 but a few new launches, keeping totals roughly level. The piece argues small papers retain local voice and ads, though the overall field narrows each year.
