Government Beet Seed Trials Point to Profitable Sugar Industry

Special correspondence from Washington reports the new agriculture secretary is distributing beet seed for field trials to test local suitability for beet sugar. Henry T. Oxnard provides over half the seed. the rest is purchased. Seed is imported. about five tons in total. Trials advise using light sandy loam and avoid hilly ground. If beets yield over 12 percent sugar, cultivation is profitable. otherwise not. The program aims to locate ideal sites for beet sugar factories and boost farm prosperity through plant construction and employment.

Idaho Sugar Beet Enterprise Eyeing 3000 Acre Boise Land

James Jennings and Idaho investors plan a 3000 acre tract near Boise to grow sugar beets. They built a 40 mile canal to water the land and experiment with beet seed shipment received. Field Supervisor Austin may travel from Salt Lake to instruct farmers as trials proceed. Bapt. C. A. Granger traveled to Salt Lake today.

McKinley May Visit Utah for Jubilee

President McKinley and his cabinet may travel to Utah if the congress adjourns by July 1. The plan follows assurances given to a Utah delegation at the White House this morning after they were barred from inviting the president to attend the semi centennial jubilee.

A Lehi M I A Fair committee met to start preparations with a tentative October date. Subcommittees will handle Agriculture Floriculture Art and Curiosities Fancy Work Culinary Mechanical Mineral and overseers will recruit help. A Saturday meeting will decide prizes and awards. Public offers for prizes are welcome.
