The winter chautauqua and festival will be held here October 23 through 28. Early start challenges the committee but guarantors and supporters are stepping up. Entreaties note high class entertainments across five days and tickets are on sale urging patrons to buy and back the event.
Former labor leader Bob Hodges spoke to a medium sized crowd about his 31 years in the United States, mining in Washington, family service in World War I, six years as King County sheriff, and returning to office. He praised the Republican Party for labor legislation, criticized President Wilson, and urged independent voters to seek a forward looking platform rather than past glories.

The U S Civil Service Commission announced an open competitive examination for forest ranger on October 25. Examinations in Washington will be held in Bellingham Okanogan Olympia Republic Seattle Tacoma Walla Walla and Wenatchee.

The Seattle Chamber of Commerce will conduct a six day tour of North Central Washington beginning October 17. Leavenworth residents are asked to prepare a welcoming reception.

Frank W. Guilbert of the Eastern Washington Highway Association argues the Carlyon Bill costs $30,000,000 in principal plus $12,900,000 interest for pavement, while pay-as-you-go would quickly build $42,000,000 of highways with the same funds and free license fees for state road needs, implying more roads under the latter plan.
A Cox Thompson stage driven by W W Thompson with four passengers ran off the grade east of the Curtis ranch on the Leavenworth Peshastin road when meeting a truck.
