State Highways Consume Large Share of Local Taxes
A government statement prepared for Governor Hay shows that about one third of all state taxes go to roads and schools. In many Washington counties road spending exceeds a third of tax revenue, with Cow litz reporting 50 percent in 1911 and Jefferson County at 20.5 percent. Chelan County spent 37 percent on highways from a total tax of 246000 plus, totaling 88630.88 for roads.
