Farmer Hurt When Trapped By Bales

Jim Wolf of the Remsen area was badly injured in a bale yard accident on Friday August 31 as high winds toppled a load of baled hay. He jumped from the wagon to save himself but was struck by falling bales at the bale chute and hospitalized until Monday. He is recuperating at home. Neighbors helped fill the silo and provide meals and supplies during cleanup with many locals assisting on Tuesday in finishing the silo filling and lunch service.

Electrical Field Day Demonstrates Modern Farm Wiring

Wireama The Iowa Fire Underwriters Association will cooperate with Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative to display a typical Iowa Farm properly wired for modern equipment. Owned by Lowell and Myrtle Parks, the farm lies 8 miles east of Remsen in Plymouth County. The event shows how rural electricity can be best used, with demonstrations of appliances and wiring meeting strict specs. J P Hentges, an Le Mars insurance agent, arranged for the association to attend and educational films will be shown under a tent on site, expecting a large crowd.

Albert Croxell dies in Portland after brief illness

Albert Croxell 84 of Portland Ore formerly of Sioux City died Monday after a brief illness. Born September 7 1871 in Griswold Ia he farmed near Sioux City before moving to Torrington Wyo in 1936 and Port Jam in 1940. Survivors include two sons Earl and Lester a daughter Eunice Ide a sister Jocie Cammerigg and three grandchildren. Body to be taken to Alon Westcott funeral home for services and burial.

Funeral for Frank Woolroth in Inglewood California

Funeral and burial services were held in Inglewood California for Frank Woolroth a former James resident who died in Los Angeles. He married Luella Bennet in 1897 and the family lived on a farm east of James. Survivors include a daughter Viela of Los Angeles two daughters in California and a brother Sam of Hinton Texas.

Lewis Hardware to Close After Rent Dispute

Irving Lewis, manager, says Our Own Hardware will close after a complete stock out. Disagreement with building owner Alfred Braugh over a $200 four month rent and rising taxes led to quitting rather than sign a five year lease. The store vows to protect customers during liquidation.

After claiming the Fife Championship of Iowa in Sioux City, the Le Mars group faced tough national competition. Newark New Jersey took first place while a Sioux City organization finished seventh, a modest showing. Des Moines visitors Mr and Mrs Everald Paskett and Mrs Lawrence Gibbens attended the Sale Fair during their Des Moines trip.

Le Mars public schools report record first day enrollment

Le Mars opened the 1986-57 school year with a first day enrollment of 1168 pupils, 22 more than last June’s close and 80 above last year’s first day. Elementary enrollment rose to 605 and secondary to 563, with kindergarten at 151, and rural tuition at 2. Superintendent Kinckhohn said the figure is an alltime record for the district's first day and noted anticipated growth during the first week.

Mauss Henry John Mauss dies after long illness

Henry John Mauss aged 65 formerly a Remsen farm laborer died at a Le Mars hospital after two years of illness. Born March 15 18Y1 in Plymouth county he was son of Henry and Marie Mauss. Survived by sister Mrs Fred Seel brother Frank and a half brother Otto Kohnke all of Remsen. Funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran church Remsen with Rev Alfred Christiansen officiating burial in Remsen city cemetery under Mogtter funeral home direction.

Schmidt dies in Chicago after long illness

Matt Schmidt, 78, former Le Mars and Heron Lake resident, died Monday in Chicago after a long sickness. Funeral services were held Thursday in Chicago with burial there. Born November 4, 1877, in Bissen Luxemburg, he came to Amatcu in 1983 and lived in Le Mars Heron Lake areas before moving to Chicago where he worked in business. His wife Hannah died in 1948. Survivors include three sons Irvin Harold Emil, all of Chicago a daughter Ruby Sierkierski of Chicago another sister Mrs Mike Jentges of Heron Lake and a brother Mike of Chicago.

Funeral services for Mrs Feala Mahe 64 former resident and widow of Afahr were held Thursday in Van Nuys California. Elmer H Messer Funeral Home oversaw arrangements with burial in Van Nuys. Mahe born August 8 1892 in Cherokee Iowa married in Sioux City and moved to California about TR years ago. Anna Katherine Grimes 68 died August 6 after a heart attack at a Portland hospital. Born September 19, 1888 in Adlon Iowa she lived near Curris Minnesota before moving to Le Mars then Portland with husband Charles H Grimes who died in 1936. Mr and Mrs John Luken of Brunsville celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary at home on September 2. Massive barn blaze destroys farm buildings near Orange City

A large barn, silo, tool shed, hog shed, and granary on Martin Rink’s farm a mile north of Orange City burned Monday. Grain and hay were a loss, several calves and a bull perished. A milking machine and cooler were destroyed. Mrs Rank reported the fire. Orange City Alton and Sioux Center fire crews saved the dwelling despite damage. The farm is owned by Arie Rank of Orange City.

Infant Pederson Rites Held at Wadena Cemetery

Graveside rites were conducted Monday at the Wadena cemetery for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Pederson. The baby died shortly after birth on Sunday August 27 at Wadena Hospital. Survivors include the parents one brother Davey and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Collinsen of Le Mary and Mrs. Lee Pederson of Minneapolis Minnesota.

Fred Bender Dies After Lingering Illness in California

Former Le Mars resident Fred Bender died August 100 at Scouse Hospital in Long Beach after a lingering sickness friends learned. A son Harold Bender lives in Van Nuys California. Funeral services were held August 78 2986 at Mortell's Chapel Long Beach with Dr George McDonald officiating. burial in Angeles Abbey Memorial Park.

The Merrill Riding Club show on September 1, 1956 declared winners across events. Top placers included L. E.
