Remsen Boy Drowned In Stock Tank
An 18 month old boy, Ith Schwarz, son of Mr and Mrs Marvin Schwarz of Remsen, drowned Thursday evening in a five foot stock water tank on his grandparents farm four miles southwest of Remsen. The body was found by his father on returning from chores. Survivors include the parents, maternal grandparents and a four month old brother, Daniel, and paternal grandparents. Funeral services were at 930 am Saturday at St Marys Catholic church Remsen with burial in the parish cemetery.

Lightning strikes barns near Alton and Sioux Center causes losses
Lightning struck a Clarence Streff barn southeast of Alton burning it to the ground and destroying contents including cattle and grain while neighboring buildings were saved by Alton and Remsen fire crews. Another fire swept a former Hansen home in North Alton. in Sioux Center, a tree and a roof were struck and 3000 bales of hay burned at Halstein farm with four communities aiding to protect structures.

Alton awards pool contract to Sioux City contractor
At Alton Tuesday night bids for the new swimming pool were opened and the contract awarded to Bob Nyberg, Concrete Contractor of Sioux City, for 29,950. Construction to begin within weeks and be ready by next summer, weather permitting. The Town Council may authorize a $1,200 wading pool from other funds next summer. Other bids included F. M. Slaghke & Co. 34,509.54 and Haubrich Construction Co. 38,926 for complete installation.

Edward Stephens of Stroble drove west in a 1955 Ford that collided with a 1948 Dodge truck driven by Vernon McFarland eight miles west of Stroble on Thursday afternoon. Sun glare may have blinded Stephens. his car crushed the rear of the truck and ended across the road. Stephens was taken to Sacred Heart hospital then released. In Sioux City on August 30, 1956 a daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Eugene Kramer of Hinton at Lutheran hospital. John Even of Allen and Mrs John Weiler of Le Mars were discharged from Sacred Heart hospital on Thursday. Mrs Walter Jeck of Merrill was discharged from that hospital and moved to the county home. A son was born to Mr and Mrs John Garretson of Hull at Sioux Center hospital on Thursday. Rickey Hawke, three year old son of Mr and Mrs Dale Hanke, was kicked by horses at the Plymouth County Fair sustaining a scalp wound treated at Sacred Heart hospital. Mrs Gerturde Tullis fractured her hip after a fall Saturday morning and was moved to the Methodist hospital in Sioux City by Oscar Schmid. The Tullis have faced prior injuries from a year ago car accident. Mr and Mrs Fred Osburn and sons of California, Mrs Agnes Kock of Le Mars, and Mrs Helen Kniple of Sioux City visited the Gert Siebens home Thursday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Gerald J Kenaley of Niles Michigan spent Labor Day weekend at the parental J L Kennley home and visited relatives in the area. James J Ortmann of Le Mars and Gretchen Wetzel of Sioux City, Max Armand McConnell of Kingsley, and Josephine A Timmins of Moville were issued marriage licenses in Woodbury County.
