Scientists Turn Sewage Into Cattle Feed at Berkeley
Researchers at the University of California Berkeley are developing a low cost method to dispose of sewage by growing algae in open ponds fed by wastewater. The algae absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, enabling bacteria to break down sewage while yielding a protein rich feed for livestock. Early results suggest 10 pounds of algae per 1 million gallons of sewage, with ponds already used to some extent, though scaling the crop remains uncertain.
