Westmar Campaign Moves Toward York College Merger

Le Mars business leaders and Westmar College officials report progress in a two year fundraising effort to avert a deficit and boost endowment. The drive backs the York College merger plan and aims to raise additional funds to reach a $50,000 milestone and complete a $20,000 local gap.

Hot Wire Sparks Crowd At Bolser Park

A live wire sparked near the Bolser play park at 9 30 Tuesday night drawing many spectators. No damage was reported as the fire department responded and soon contained the incident. Fears of nearby leaves catching fire were noted. In other news the Philathea Bible class of the United Brethren church meets Monday November 29 at 2 30 p.m. at Mrs Sam Athe's home with Mrs Ella Wetzel as assistant hostess and Mrs Lewis Gra lapp leading devotions.

Auction Sets Price At 391 Per Acre For Le Mars Farm

Ed Bush bought the 80 acre Bernard Van Rocke farm three miles east of Le Mars for 391 per acre. The sale, held Tuesday November 23, was conducted by Richards Kuden and Adams auctioneers.

Walter J. Jenkins Dies. Funeral Set In Sioux City

Walter L. Jenkins 66 of Sioux City died Monday at home after a heart attack. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Anderson funeral home with Rev. Charles Smith officiating. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. He was a truck driver for Sioux City Stock Yards Co. and a union member. He lived in Le Mars 25 years, came from Portland, Oregon 11 years ago. Born June 4, 1888 in Griswold, Indiana. Survived by widow Lotlie Cleone, three sons Leo W Marvin W Darrell F, four daughters Leona Kediske Marcella McCormack Vivian Reese Charlotte Clinkenbeard, four sisters May Rose Ellen Page Lillian Hodge Myrie Loughrey, and 18 grandchildren. Elizabeth Smith of Sioux City visited her sister Bertha Rothlisberger.

Retail sales in Le Mars for April to June rose 6.1 percent over the 1953 second quarter, per State Tax Commission figures. The northwest Iowa increase exceeded the state gain of 3.9 percent. Cars collide near Le Mars injure Marcus resident

George Scott of Marcus was watching a crow and parked his car on Hwy 5 west of Remsen when Francis Norris of Le Mars rear ended the Scott vehicle at about 9 a.m. A separate two car crash at a bridge north of Le Mars involved James York in a 1951 Mercury and Albert Stevens in a 1948 Chevrolet, with both left front fenders damaged.
