Farmers in Plymouth County Use 1956 Price Support Loans

Plymouth County farmers have placed 20 868 bushels of 1956 corn under government price support loans as of November 15. Of this, 12 303 bushels qualify for the higher 1.43 per bushel rate, while 8 505 bushels qualify for the non compliance 0 18 rate. Additional 1956 crops include 1570 bushels oats 648 flaxseed and 10 744 soybeans. Farmers must apply by January 31 for small grain sorghum flaxseed and soybeans and by May 31 for corn loans and purchase agreements. full details at the county ASC office.

Gully Structure Complete in Hancock Township

The gully structure on Amos Ross and Lester Williams farms in Hancock township was completed this week. Built with cooperation from the County Board of Supervisors, the ASC Committee, the County Engineer, and the Plymouth County Soil Conservation District along with the Soil Conservation Service, it will serve as a road crossing, gully central water source, and recreational area. SCS Area Engineer Clarence Bueler notes a site lake may reach 48 feet deep at normal dam levels. District technicians report terraces completed for Walter Hartman, Amos Ross, and Ted Haffman. contour lines done for Henry Sanow and John Reinech. and other soil work for Lawrence and Wilton Paulsen and others.

Slow Snowfall Hinders Drivers as Storm Halts

Roads were icy on Tuesday amid a snowstorm that dropped about two and a half inches of snow and .15 inches of precipitation. Winds and blizzard conditions arrived early Wednesday. By then, the temperature fell to the low 20s with Tuesday’s high at 32 and a low of 23.

Collisions on Ice Blank Highway 75 and 73 Injure Vehicles

Two crashes occurred on November 19 on icy highway curves. Laris Sutherkang of Bulaton collided with a northbound Siouxland bus driven by Paul Adams near Merrill, causing 300 total damage. Minutes later Ivan Carlson of Axiel Kansas struck a parked Wolbers car then another Sanders car at the same curve, totaling 98 in damage.

Memorial rites for Westmar football player Stanley Short

Stanley E Short 41 died after brain surgery following a football injury on November 3 at Le Mars. A Des Moines native son of Dewey and Mildred Short, he was a Westmar College football player and Evangelical United Brethren Church ministry student. Funeral services were held in Des Moines with Rutledge funeral home assisting. Survivors include his parents a brother a sister and a grandmother.

New Firebug Squirrel Incident Baffles Officials

A state forester praised Jowans for burn prevention due to education while a district forester Milo Peterson on a radio program praised warnings before reporting a grass fire sparked by a fox squirrel near Elgin. Mrs Anna Madsen, 96, longtime Oscelen county resident, died early Tuesday after a stroke. Funeral services for Michael J. Lucid, retired farmer, will be at 9 am Thursday at St James Catholic Church with Rev J LeWelle officiating, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Lucid, born July 22, 1875 in Independence, Iowa, moved to Le Mars and farmed locally before settling in town. He married Frances McDenutt on May 12, 1909 in Sioux City and leaves a widow, stepmother, and several brothers and sisters.
