Hull Woman Killed Instantly In A Collision

A two car crash on a county gravel road five miles northeast of Hull fatally injured Mrs. Sarah Douma Heyman, 54, a passenger in her daughter’s car, as John Vis, 20, of Boyden drove his vehicle head on. Three others were hospitalized, including her daughter, Loren Heyman, 4, and Vis, in good condition per Sioux Center hospital. The wreck left both cars a total loss. Investigating officers were Highway Patrolman Lawrence Haze and Deputy Sheriff Ted Hoogeland. The fatality marks Sioux county’s tenth highway death this year. Survivors include widower Casey Heyman, a daughter, and five grandchildren.

Westhoff Improves At Hospital After Self Inflicted Wounds

George Westhoff, about 45 and a former Le Mars resident living in South Dakota, drove to the Le Mars police station at 3 45 P M Sunday with self inflicted wounds from a hammer. He claimed the wounds were self inflicted after a drunkenness fine the previous day. He asked to be taken to Sacred Heart hospital where a nurse said he is improving. Westhoff has no home in Le Mars since last spring, and his smaller children are with relatives.

Le Mars To Hear Safety Award At City Meeting

Le Mars officials will host a Tuesday meeting on November 20, 1956. Des Moines safety expert John Hoeven will present Le Mars its 1955 safety award for the 11th straight year without a fatal accident. Police Chief Fay Terpenning urged caution as the year 1956 nears its end with a goal of a 16th safety award.

Multiple Vehicle Accidents Reported Around Le Mars Area

On Nov 15 and 16 and 17 a series of motor crashes were logged near Le Mars. Damages ranged from 350 to 500 dollars with cars and a Diamond T truck involved. Annual Party for Plymouth county and Auashary in Merrill

The annual Christmas Party of the Plymouth county A. L. C. and Auashary was held Saturday evening November 16 at the Legion Club in Merrill. Fifty five members and guests enjoyed a potluck ham dinner, followed by separate business meetings. Auxiliary officers were elected for 1957 and 1958 with Mrs. Jor Shit of Le Mars as president, Mrs. Merton Jessen Merrill vice president, and Mrs. Herman Jaffer Le Mars secretary and treasurer. The auxiliary approved a dollar donation to the Multiple Sclerosis page turner for the state hospital at Iowa City and agreed to supply items for the Woodbury County Society for Crippled Children and adults at Sioux City. The next meeting will be in April at Remsen, when donations of needed supplies will be collected for the Woodbury Society. Members also brought Christmas gifts and toys for distribution at the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City.

Two Booze Purchases Reported in Merrill Raids

Four state agents and local officials raided two Merrill taverns on Thursday night. A glass containing alleged whisky was found behind the Derby tavern bar and a glass at the Midway tavern. The Derby is run by Dr. Frank Michalosky and the Midway by Hazel Schuete. State officials ordered the raids. charges may allege keeping liquor where beer is sold.

More than 1300 people visited Le Mars Public Schools during Education Week events led by Superintendent Harvey N. Kluckhohn. Among them 564 elementary visitors, 630 at Parent's Night, 191 Clark, 211 Franklin, 152 Central, plus 113 during call events. Also 43 fathers attended the visiting periods. Veterans Day program and Prospective Teachers Day noted. Parents' Night called the largest turnout in nine years.

John Guntren former Merrill resident died Thursday from a gunshot wound on a friend's farm near Huron South Dakota. Funeral services were conducted in Carthage South Dakota where he lived and farmed.
