Evening education enrolls 100 in Le Mars classes

About 100 adults from Le Mars and nearby areas have joined the Le Mars public schools general adult evening program now under way. Seven courses are offered, with welding and sewing split into four sections. Instructors include Richard Hammans, Angela Robberman, Blanche Annis, Carl Schelin, Bart Moir, Herman Vander Well, and Ina Vail.

Cherokee defeated Le Mars Central 25 to 12 Friday night with Mike Clausen scoring three touchdowns, two on runs and one on a pass from Bob Hall. Michael H Perlot 80 longtime Granville cafe owner died Wednesday. Funeral was Sunday 10 a m at St Joseph Catholic Church Granville with Rev N J Becher officiating and burial in the church cemetery. Born March 17 1876 in Granville he married Mars Haupert November 22 1898. Survivors include his widow daughter Irene Kook of Granville son LeRoy of Grandville two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Kathryn Baack daughter of Mrs. Carl Bauch of Mars married Donald Gene Heage on Friday November 9 1956. The ceremony took place at Saint Johns Katherine church in Craig Iowa with readings at 730 PM. Mrs. Ka Verne Benen and Bruce and Brenda arrived from Tel Aviv Israel to visit the Johnson and Benson families in Haley South Dakota. The couple has been stationed in Tel Aviv for two years and will move to Fort Carson Colorado after the new year.

Remsen Finds New Water Source From Old Deep Well

Remsen’s water scare eases as the long-closed 400 ft well sunk by A J Duster in 1937 yields 256 gallons per minute in eight hours. The town will wait for lab analysis before adding the well to the supply while the northern field shows a higher water level.

Obituary for Herbert L. Baldwin of Fredonia and Ravina

Herbert L. Baldwin born November 1880 in Fredonia township Plymouth County. He taught at Center school and later held roles from livery to bank president in Ravina before moving to Pomona California in 1946. He died October 16, 1936, after a long life of farming banking and community service. Funeral services were held at Pollock Mortuary chapel with interment in Pomona Mausoleum.

Canvass Sets Night Openings for Le Mars Stores

Rogers of the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce announced a complete canvass of local retailers with scheduled evening openings during the Christmas shopping period. Stores will stay open Friday and on additional dates December 12 14 18 19 20 21 22, until 9 PM, then close at their usual time on Christmas Eve December 24.

Plymouth County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting Notice

The Plymouth County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting Wednesday night November 4 at the Girls 4-H Building on the Le Mars fairgrounds. A buffalo barbecue starts at 6 30 with the business meeting at 8. Guest speaker is Harry Bryson head of Field Service for the American Farm Bureau. Professor J Frank Jewett of Westmar College Music Department will give an organ recital Sunday November 8 at 3 30 P M in Thoren Hall Chapel. A reception follows on the first floor. Jewett, a Northwestern graduate with BA and BMus, earned an MMus from the Midwest School of Music and did graduate work at USC. He attended the American Guild of Organists national meeting in New York City as Western Iowa Chapter delegate, then the Methuen Organ Institute in Andover MA under Andre Muarehal of Paris. He has been on the Westmar staff since 1927.

Pheasant Hunters Face Spotty First Weekend

Large crowds hunted pheasants Saturday and Sunday marking the season. Hunters report many holes in the fields but some birds were harvested. Birds moved north seeking feed and farmers posted land to require hunter permission first, making hunting spots more limited.

Plymouth County Men Exhibit At International Livestock Show

Plymouth county stockmen will join Iowa exhibitors at the 57th International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago from November 23 to December. Heid Brothers of Hinton will show a purebred Shorthorn herd, while B F. & Howard Held enter three Angus steers and a Shorthorn in steer events plus one carcass in the Exposition Cattle Carcass Contest. H. Russell Held enters three animals in carcass classes. the firm previously supplied Grand Champion carcass at 1949 and 1950 shows. Three Plymouth youths Gary and Garnet Junck of Hinton and Roy Maass of Remsen enter calves in junior classes, all prize winners at summer fairs. The exposition covers 10 1/2 acres in the International Amphitheatre and nearby stockyards, with nearly half a million visitors expected. The 14 International Horse Shows feature the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police Musical Ride for the first time in Chicago.
