Yale researchers estimate 90 alcoholics with complications in Plymouth County based on 1940s data. The study compares rates nationwide, notes rising female drinkers from one in 25 to one in four, and urges medical and psychological intervention and a compassionate attitude toward alcoholics.
Attorney General Dayton Coun tryman says he has asked Plymouth County Attorney Sturges to file padlock proceedings against two taverns within two weeks. Sturges will start proceedings soon as court terms allow. Hy Lo in Remsen and Central Ja Mars cited amid ongoing disputes over murder transcript work and county requests.
Westbound on the way to Le Mars a Western Engineering Co. employee, Morris Arvin, clipped the rear of Leo Fish’s car near the Albert Kurtzhals driveway. Arvin’s Mack truck left the road, jamming into the ditch. Arvin sustained a hurt hand while Fish’s car only had minor damage.
Widgen Construction Co. has begun a 50 by 100 foot all steel fireproof warehouse with concrete foundation and floor beside Phil Groetken’s property on Highway 75. It should be ready around July 1. Owner J. J. Killeas plans to use it for farm and machinery storage, with possible future manufacturing.

Ahlers, Plymouth County ASC chair, urged farmers to run arithmetic on corn acreage allotments versus available land, rotations, and yields using 1950–54 Town averages and 1956 price supports. He shown sample calculations for compliant, noncompliant, and all corn scenarios, noting factors like fertilizer costs, finances, storage, and soybean resilience.
John Raymond Scheitler and Wilbur William Renken of Le Mars are scheduled to depart for military service on Tuesday May 8. The two men are listed for induction from the local area and are to report for duty as directed by the draft authorities.

Farmers with 1955 crop soybeans tied to government price support were urged by the Plymouth county ASC office to review the advantage of redeeming pledged beans and selling on the market as May 30 settlement nears. ASC Chairman Henry Ahlers noted local prices have been above the support rate and several producers have already paid off loans to capitalize on the higher market. He warned against guessing market moves and encouraged watching the market to act to best advantage.
Elmer J. Land reports soil moisture at very low levels similar to November 1955. Statewide samples from Primghar and Castana show under two inches of plant available water in the top five feet. Forecasts suggest little moisture gain without rainfall, with April to mid June expected to yield only small increases if rainfall remains scarce. Farmers are adopting contour farming and other moisture-preserving practices to protect crops.

Miss Betty Bush of Marcus wed Herman Freking J. son of Mr and Mrs Herman Freking at Holy Name church Marcus on Thursday May 3. They plan to reside on a farm near Le Marrs.
Ninety five juniors and sponsors prepare to honor the Senior class, Faculty, and Board of Education at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom on Wednesday May 8 in the gym. A four course dinner will be served by juniors under supervision with decorated tables and a program of toasts music and talks followed by dancing with Bob Conley’s orchestra until midnight. An open house from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday will welcome parents friends and patrons to view the decorations.
Alvin Henrich, newly elected Floyd Valley Watershed Association director living near Le Mars, is building 3300 feet of level terraces this week. Extension Area Soil Conservationist Elmer J. Lund notes the effort aims to hold water and prevent soil erosion despite weather. Nearby farmers Ray Bogdin Fredonia Township, Bob Kurth Elgin Township, Glen Clark Hungerford, and Ralph Bloomedal north of Alton have also constructed terraces recently.
Eva Lund will teach a wood finishing session at the 4-H Building during the fair rounds on Monday May 14. Open to all 4-H girls leaders and interested mothers. Friends and relatives traveled to Worthington Minnesota for Lor iay Stumpf funeral services after his death on May 1. He was born September 2 1866 and lived to an advanced age. Services were held at Grace Lutheran church in Ewington Township Jackson County Minnesota with attendees from Le Mars including Mr and Mrs John Westhoff Mia and Mrs John Kruse Mr and Mrs Gerd Renken Mr and Mrs Henry Meyer Helen Popken Henry Jelken William Kruse Mrs Dick Westhoff and Mrs George Ovthen.
Janice Ann Nannen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Nannen of rural Akron, died today at home after a long heart illness. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Preston Township Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery under the direction of Mater Tuwer home in Le Mars. Elizabeth Nannen of Le Mars is the paternal grandmother.

Charles Moffatt 62 and wife Genevieve 43 died or were seriously injured when a head on crash with Vernon Blane 22 and passenger Miller occurred near Le Mars. Blane remained hospitalized with facial injuries, possible leg fracture, and earlier college work in Colorado. Debon pianist Chee-Chee Moffatt was listed as seriously injured. Authorities cited unclear cause and noted the crash occurred near a curve last seen near Kass’s 1955 fatality. Moffatt, born May 26, 1893, lived in Sioux City since 1940 and worked for National Woodworker. survivors include a widow Coral and multiple relatives. Body taken to Anderson funeral home in Sioux City.
Moore Lumber Company sues Clifford Madden Dora Weber Henry Weber Olimann and Phelps Bank Kingsley and others in Le Mars district court over a lot in Klock 2 Grandview Park Subdivision. The suit alleges oral agreement to furnish lumber and materials for a dwelling, with $215.70 invoiced and unpaid, plus additional claims of $25 and $435 for labor and materials. The plaintiff seeks judgement for $3600 plus interest and costs, and asserts its lien is senior while others claim liens are junior or inferior.

Daniel Buckley escaped injury when his 1982 Amternationa truck plunged into the ditch three miles west of Renw sen. He damaged the vehicle with S300 in repairs. In majors court, Maurice Visin was fined for speeding and Bernard Nuten for improper protests. Willion Babcock was named Plymouth county chairman of the Jews Children's Home Society. Mrs Cannon praised the agency’s service to children in Plymouth County and statewide.
The Iowa Chiropractors Association held its fourth annual Spring Convention and Posture Contest on May 6 at the Woodrow Hotel Des Moines. More than 250 attendees heard Dr Joseph Janse of Chicago speak as 18 winners from 9 districts competed for posture honors. Kay Johnson Le Mars was crowned queen with Carol Fleck Oskalossa as runner up, both recognized at a luncheon where Gov. Leo Hoegh distributed awards.

Glenn R Knudsen 35 of Pierson died at home after a long illness. Funeral held at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Pierson with Rev. C Pence and Rev. Vernon Powell officiating. Burial in Kingsley cemetery. Dickivon Funeral Home of Kingsley in charge. Born June 29 1920 in Plymouth County he farmed south of Kingsley before moving to Pierson. Survived by widow Lola Bradshaw a son Miles a daughter Razanna his mother Mrs Ver Knudsen of Le Mars three sisters and four brothers.

John Wenthoff longtime Remsen resident died Saturday evening at a Sioux Falls Veteran's hospital after five months of hospitalization. He lived with his sister Mrs. Mary Knapp and had been an invalid for years. Funeral services will be held at St Mary's Catholic Church in Renmen Fisch Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Sheriff reports a single vehicle accident on highway 33 eleven miles northwest of Le Mars at 2 a m Sunday. Jerome FE Stockdale of Estherville, driving a 1953 Oldsmobile, apparently fell asleep at the wheel and veered into a ditch. The car was towed to Stop Brothers Garage. no injuries. A 15 year old daughter and Mrs Wayne Schinner hosted an all night slumber party the prior Friday night with guests listed.
