New fertilizer placement method for corn improves starter use
Arlie A. Pierson Plymouth County extension director notes a new in-row starter fertilizer technique illustrated in picture 4, placing fertilizer to the side and below seed to avoid seedling damage. Iowa State agronomist E R Duncan adds that newer planter attachments allow higher safe starter rates, potentially reducing need for light broadcast applications. Earlier methods with fertilizer above and beside seed, or in-row misplacements, can delay emergence or reduce yields, while correct in-row placement at planting shows best growth.

Communist Party push to repeal immigration laws warned
Washington reports that the American Communist Party is organizing a national campaign to repeal immigration laws and permit wider entry into the United States. The House Un-American Activities Committee released a February 21 resolution from the Sixteenth National Convention in New York City directing an aggressive effort, including a two day national conference, to undermine the McCarran Immigration and Nationality Act. Senator Jenner of Indiana warned of red front groups aiding the drive and urged Americans to oppose changes eroding border protections and national policy. He stressed that liberal immigration must not override the need to preserve American government and freedoms.
