Transformation of K Company to A Company in 133rd Infantry
On 30 April 1959 and 1 May 1959, Company K of the 133rd Infantry became Company A of the 2nd Battle Group as all units of the 34th Infantry Division Iowa and Nebraska National Guard reorganized into pentomic units. Nine Northwest Iowa towns formed the group with headquarters at Sioux City under Lt. Col. Fred W. Tinker. Le Mars retained rifle company status. Company A’s structure mirrors Company K with headquarters, three rifle platoons, and a weapons platoon. Rifle squads grew to 9 men per platoon, the weapons platoon adopt 81 mm mortars replacing 60 mm mortars, and the 106 mm recoilless rifle mounted on jeeps replacing the 57 mm. The pentomic shift changes tactics, training, and some personnel. Col. Orville H. Livermore moves from Company K to Plans and Training. Leonard A. Mayrose becomes Company A’s commanding officer.
