VerHeul 50 longtime Newkirk consolidated school superintendent died near Nevada Iowa Tuesday evening after an automobile crash. coroner Dr Schanche says death likely from a coronary heart attack but cause not certain relation to the crash. Double Rites For DeBoers In Hull Funeral Services

Double funeral services were held for Mr and Mrs John DeBoer who died in an auto accident near Laverne Minnesota April 22. The rites at their home and at First Reformed church of Hull were led by Rev Wayne Lemmen and Rev Wm C DeJong with special music by Henry Hymans and daughter Mrs Gorzeman. Organist Mrs Lawrence Oelrich accompanied. Survivors include three children Gossen of Holland Julia Elmer Rock of Kingsley and Gerrit who farms the home place and six grandchildren. One sister and two brothers also survive along with a sister Mrs Dick Heusinveld who preceded him in death.

Planning Commission Urges Action On City Storm Sewers

At the regular monthly meeting of the Day Planning Commonw on Wednesday evening April 29 a resolution was passed urging the city council to fund engineering work and proceed with storm sewer construction in sections along Ist Ave west of Sheehan Produce Co to 1st Ave, near Ist St and 6th, and a two block 6th Street SW link, plus a plan for remodeling the Sinclair Service Station at 4th Ave and Plymouth St with strict on adjoining property. The commission will decide later on widening a sidewalk and tree trimming to improve street lamp illumination. The next meeting is Wednesday May 27.

Akron farmer Otto Popken heads to West Germany on first native visit

Otto J F Popken of Hawarden, a longtime Akron area farmer, left Monday by plane for a visit to his native Jever in Oldenburg, West Germany. He came to the United States 40 years ago and this marks his first return to his homeland.

Burgomaster Tuesday night, councilman A G VanderMeer becomes acting mayor while Mayor Long tours Europe for about two months. On Tuesday evening the Baacks and their house guest visited in the Fred Baack home. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bainbridge of Cherokee welcomed a baby boy born May 1.
