Remsen Woman Hurt In Train Wreck Near Sioux City
A collision between a car and a Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific switch engine at Second and Nebraska streets in Sioux City sent 9 year old Remsen resident Miss Jeanette Poeckes to St. Vincent hospital with a badly injured left foot. Driver Robert Harpenau said he misread a flagman’s signal and could not avoid the engine. The engineer Harry Peterson and passenger Roy Whipple suffered minor injuries. Poeckes’s condition was listed as good Sunday night. X rays were planned for Monday.

Bailus Dutch Holland aged 25 assistant manager of the Club Debonair and Sam Orban 30 operator of a seed and feed firm were seriously hurt when their 1951 model car struck ice on highway 75 a mile north of Merrill. The car plunged into a ditch and overturned. Orban was dismissed after treatment and Holland remained in the hospital for observation.

State Patrol to Run Single-Man Midnight Shifts
For the first time in state highway patrol history, patrolmen began working alone at night starting March 3. The policy shifts from two officers per car after dark to one to counter rising traffic toll, doubling nighttime patrol strength from 60 to 120 between 4 p.m. and midnight. Start Planning '57 Program Conservation Meeting in Le Mass
Breeders of soil and water conservation in Plymouth county will meet Friday March 16 1956 at 8 p m in Le Mass Court House to review the 1956 government cost sharing program and to make recommendations for the 1957 program. Henry J Ahlers chair of the county ASC committee notes the meeting follows the national pattern as one of the first steps in formulating ACP. Attendees include ASC community committeemen soil district commissioners and district reps of Soil Conservation Service Extension Service Farmers Home Administration and Forest Service. Recommendations will be sent to the Iowa ASC office and then to Washington for the national 1957 plan. Iowa will then formulate its program and submit it to counties next fall as in past years.
