Le Mars Fireworks Show Draws Big Fourth Crowd
Le Mars offers a free July 4 program at the Plymouth County 4-H fairgrounds with a flag raising, a Walmer Post Drum and Bugle Corps performance, and an American Legion reading. The 9 pm fireworks include large shells and will be followed by a military ball, a balloon dance at the armory, door prizes, refreshments, and music by Ralph Easton's band. Admission to the dance is 75 cents per person.

The Phil Groetken family of Le Mars swept most prizes at the Iown show held June 20 at Husely bown. Barbara Groetken led overall with 28 entries in Western Pleasure. John Rogers won first in open cutting. Phil and Barbara tied for second and third in open cutting. The Groetkens also took top spots in Miss Barbara Groetken’s Miss queen candidate contest for Sioux Empire Rodeo at Sioux Falls. Barbara Groetken has been unbeaten in Western Pleasure across nine contests in Iowa and nearby states this year.

How The Globe Post Made It Rain In 1947
In the summer of 1947 The Globe-Post financed rain seeding over West Le Mars using a rented AT-6 plane. Pilot Wade Woodke and John F. Starzal released crushed dry ice through a camera hole, climbing to 21 050 feet to seed clouds. Rain began above West Le Mars, creating a quarter inch shower that drew mixed reactions from a farmer whose buildings were wet. The incident sparked a threatened lawsuit, though general rains followed later in the week with no attribution to the paper.
