A lone gunman robbed the Merrill Northside cafe about 1 45 am taking 40 dollars in bills from night waitress Jackie Smith who described a red faced man in a brown green plaid jacket. Police link him to a prior daytime theft at Gregg Fret and Grocery in Stout City with a companion. The getaway car had a Woodbury county license and the weapon was a nickel plated .38 caliber pistol.

Police investigated after a patrolman, off duty, spotted a motorist in Riverside and recognized the suspect from a description in the press. Mary Waterbury Waterbury a retired nurse died at Akron hospital on Wednesday January 13 after a long illness. She was born August 11, 1877 in New York state and lived in Akron Iowa most of her life. Survived by one daughter and one son John Waterburys with the Army in Okinawa and one grandson. Funeral services Sunday at 1 45 p.m. at the Rossow Funeral Home Akron and 2 p.m. at the Methodist church. Burial in Riverside Cemetery Akron. At about 3 08 p m a fire at 717 2nd Street East Le Mars caused minor damage to the Carl L Lorenzen home. Mrs Lorenzen, alone at home, reported the blaze after paper near the kitchen stove caught fire and scorched a wall. Two Le Mars fire trucks responded and smoke damage was reported throughout the house.

Nicholas Eggink 65 of South Sioux City died Tuesday after a six week illness. Born December 24, 1890 in Hull Iowa he married Marie Van Den Berge February 27, 1917 at Orange City Iowa. He farmed near Le Mars before moving to Sour City in 1926 later residing in South Sioux City. He worked 28 years as a Swift & Co packing plant truck driver and was a member of Assembly of God church. Survivors include his widow three sons Albert John Nicholas Jr two daughters Viola Moser Verna De Wall Norma Hocking four grandchildren and brother Ralph of Los Angeles. Funeral services were held at Becker funeral service.
