The Le Mars Savings Bank and the First National Bank held their annual stockholders meetings on Tuesday, January 8. Savings Bank re elected officers and directors including Gordon L. Mennen and H. J. Ahlers, with staff changes in the trust, cashier, and assist roles. First National Bank re elected all officers and directors and added Henry D. Hartman and Patricia Kanago as assistant cashiers. The banks reported a successful year with progress across departments.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Vermont of Orange City announce the engagement of daughter Joan to Ed John Frerichs son of Mrs Marie Frerichs of Le Mars. Mr and Mrs Ray Stabe announce the engagement of daughter Janice Fern to Gerald Rolling son of Mr and Mrs Leo Rolling of Le Mars. No wedding date set.
An Evening Prayer service with plainsong will be sung at 5 30 Sunday afternoon January 1 in St George's Episcopal Church. The program includes hymns and chants of praise with a sacred musical setting noted for its early church use. Community members are invited to attend and, after the service, St George's youth will host peers from Sioux City's Episco pal Churches Le Thomas St Pauls and Calvary.
A blaze wrecked a seven room farmhouse eight miles west of Akron and inDakota near Elk Point destroying the home at 80 acre Frank Bennett owner and Don Harkness tenant. The furnace basement and a deep freeze plus all contents burned. $800 cash was lost. All five Harkness children were at school and Mrs Harkness was away shopping. neighbors aided as the house and shed burned. Insurance had lapsed. Bennett and family are staying with relatives in Elk Point.
Mr and Mrs George Main celebrate 72 years of marriage with a family dinner on Monday January 14. They were married in Elk Point South Dakota on January 14 1885. The couple has two daughters Grace Spaulding and Mrs Keith Knapp of Westfield along with three grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
A December 29 wedding at Arlington Church united Tyler Waite and Donald to create a Texas and Washington D C alliance. Bride Miss Waite wore white satin with chantilly lace while bridesmaids wore cherry red silk organza. The ceremony included officers from the Air Force base and a breakfast reception for about 25 relatives. The couple plans a southern States wedding trip and will reside in Arlington.
In Le Mars the highway commission weighing station on highway 75 has sparked local opposition. Business leaders say it drains traffic and tax revenue, while truckers bypass the town to reach weight tests elsewhere. Residents propose moving the facility mid highway near Hinton or Merrill. Some outsiders have fired at the station in past incidents, raising tensions. Local truckers fear fines for unfamiliar weigh rules, while commingling issues affect Le Mars vendors and roadside property.
Mrs Henry Kling 78 of Long Beach California died at home January 8 after a short illness. Purial services were held Thursday at Christensen-Fine Funeral Home in Long Beach. Emma Schulz born January 1880 in Otter Township was married to Henry Kling March 17 at Le Mars Iowa. They lived in Stanton and Merrill before moving to Long Beach in 1947. They observed their golden wedding on March 1, 1953. Survivors include the widow and one son Fred of Long Beach, California. a sister Mrs August Kling of Beach. several nephews and one niece in the Merrill vicinity.
Mia and Mrs. Melvin Bainbridge announce the engagement of their daughter Valeria to Fed Bolton son of Mr and Mrs Walter Bolton of Kingsley. No wedding date has been set.
Mrs A J Osweiler remains resting as comfortable as can be expected at Sacred Heart hospital after a fall on basement stairs at her home Monday morning. She slipped on the last step injuring her right hip and could not rise until her husband returned for lunch. A daughter from Madison Maine and a son from Poplar Montana are visiting. Bertha Rathlisberger visits Sioux City sister.
Calvary Evangelical United Brethren church hosts its annual meeting on Thursday at 6 30 in the parish parlors. A covered dish supper follows as business, reports, and officer elections including Trustees Class Leaders and Sunday School officers are conducted. The pastor reviews the past year and plans for the new year are laid. New members welcomed as guests.
Mrs H Gritzmaker Word reports the death of Mrs H D Gritmaker in Wilmot South Dakota after a year of illness. Funeral services were held January 7 at the Presbyterian church in Wilmot with attendees from Le Mars including Mrs Mason Chapman, Mrs Orville Cooper, and Mr and Mrs Earl Chapman. Survivors list husband H D and a son Delton of Le Mars along with four sisters and a brother. Mr and Mrs Robert Dorrell and son Larry Dean returned from Newark Ohio after visiting Mrs Dorrell's mother Mrs Milo Robert Evans during the holiday.

Tickets are on sale at the Chamber office Vallmars Shoe Store and Lovely Drug Store with reserved seating by January 12. AL Myrick will preside and Nipcords Quartet will sing. The menu includes tenderloin steaks peach salad and hot rolls with coffee and dessert. Proceeds fund chamber activities with ticket holds possible by phone at Vallimars 144.
