Check fraud hits Le Mars groceries and Storm Lake
Sheriff Frank Scholer reports multiple bad checks ranging from 35 to 45 dollars were cashed at Le Mars stores last weekend. The checks are being sent to Des Moines for inspection with no reply yet. Roy Hilker Returns to LeMars After 1916 Departure
Roy Hilker of Paullina, a former LeMars resident, visited Monday to reconnect with old friends. He worked at Hansen Hardware from 1913 to 1916, earning the nickname Hungry Hilker, later linked with Cooper Clothing Co. He now manages the Paullina Iowa State liquor store, a position held for 13 years. His wife Theresa Ries of LeMars died in January. Hilker was a musician, trap drummer, organized an orchestra, played at the Elite theater, and belonged to LeMars’ old Military band. He says LeMars has grown yet holds a warm place in his heart.

Extension Director Arlie A. Pierson says soil tests are best to guide fertilizer use for oats in Plymouth County. If no soil test is available, Iowa State agronomist E R Duncan offers general recommendations: up to 20 lb nitrogen per acre on dark soils, up to 40 lb on lighter soils, 40–60 lb phosphorus per acre, potash for poorly drained soils. Legume-grass mixtures boost soil health, erosion control, and weed suppression, and can be turned under as green manure.

Funeral services for Clarence Councilman 83 in Idaho
Clarence Councilman, 83, former LeMars resident, died Tuesday in a Nampa Idaho hospital after two months illness. Funeral held Friday in Parma Idaho with burial there. Born in Harrison County Iowa, he worked with a livery business, married Susanna Buchler in 1904, moved to Idaho in 1929, celebrated golden wedding in 1954.
