A capacity crowd of 500 gathered in Remsen Sunday night to honor Roy Maass and associates behind the world beating steer that sold for 32 356 in Chicago. A major feed company advertises the winning animal, with the ad slated in The Globe Post reaching thousands of feeders.
Union defeats Westfield in both girls and boys basketball during homecoming events Friday night. A well attended dance followed. Queen Marlene Kowalke and King Richard Thompson were crowned at intermission with senior to freshman attendants listed.
Russell Gronemeyer, a Conoco station operator on Highway 75, was injured in a collision caused by a Nebraska customer who sped in and could not stop in time. Estimated medical costs total about 50 dollars with property damage around 5 dollars. Gronemeyer returned to work after Wednesday night repairs.
Two new dens of cub scouts were formed at Clark school. Den mothers are Mrs. John Beach with assistant Mrs. Melvin Koerner in one group, and Mrs. Willard Herman in the other. Listed den members include Danny Beach Charles Fergenson Rodney Koerner Dav id Sneller Harlan Utech Mark Truesdell Leland Herman Dorsey Jasters Ronald Murrvow Donald Barnhard and Brandt Taylor with den chief Larry Marbach.
Le Mars markets show rye barley corn and soybeans with prices or grades noted. Mrs Etta C Albert and Miss Leora Laughton drove to Canton South Dakota on Friday and spent the day with Mr and Mrs Tilman Carlson.
Norman Erbe, newly named Iowa attorney general, enters the Republican race for governor. Democrats counter that he trails Governor Herschel Loveless and his wife in establishing influence with party leaders and high level figures.
Harold J. Hollinger, 33, of Merrill, reported missing Sunday night, was found in Akron that night wandering in a dazed condition after walking from his home west of Merrill. Nearby, Mark Rounds, missing since last year near Sioux City, is feared dead from exposure. George Junk, over 80, found dead in Sioux City from exposure, after wandering from a nursing home. Emil Grosenhieder and wife search for their 17 year old daughter LaRae, and friend Sally Brunstedt, traced to Sioux City after taking a bus from Merrill toward Omaha. John Beech, missing from his farm north of Le Mars a year ago, remains unfound. The Beeck family endures hardship. 13 year old Carol Beeck severely burned touching a hot blouse atop an electric stove, and others suffer injuries from a car crash and a hayloft fall.
Mr and Mrs William Ludwigs announce the engagement of their daughter Ann Ellis of Storm Lake Iowa to Harm Harms son of Mr and Mrs Siebel Harms of Le Mars No wedding date has been set.
City cases in mayor’s court fined Paul Lux Cherokee $10 Josephine Homan Alton $12.50 with no operators license Richard Gaul Le Mars $27.50 for reckless driving State cases fined Fred Rush Merrill $29 for possession of a cock pheasant during closed season and $19 for carrying a loaded and assembled gun in a car.
School menu lists daily dishes from December 7 through a partial week. Items include meatballs with tomato sauce and whipped potatoes, roast venison, tuna and noodles, spaghetti with cabbage slaw, assorted salads, breads, milk, and desserts such as ice box dessert and chocolate cake.
Richs are the proud parents of a ten week old baby boy named David Luverne. He arrived at his new home last Monday. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Jesse Kallsen of Akron and Mr and Mrs Henry Helm.
Mr and Mrs Fred Susemihl celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a 630 PM family dinner at their 114 4th Ave SW home. Forty guests attended with a blue and white floral centerpiece and gifts from their children.
Mr and Mrs Alvin Huppe of Berthoud Colorado announce their daughter Virginia Jean's engagement to Carol J Parkin son of Mr and Mrs Care B Parkinson of Le Mars. Parkinson is a graduate of the late W B Parkinson who founded and led the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra in 1910. C B Parkinson was a former music instructor at Morningside and Westmar colleges. Miss Huppe is a senior and Parkin is a junior at Westmar College where both study music. No definite wedding date yet.
Mr and Mrs John Nielsen of Le Mars learned today that Ait ker Nielsen, a brother of Mr Nielsen, died on November 25 in Denmark. Full particulars will be printed later. Mr Nielsen visited Le Mars during the past year.
Grace Andersen 52 of Cherokee died Monday November 30 after a lingering illness. She had lived in Cherokee 17 years and worked with the county social welfare office. Survivors include husband Irving R Andersen two daughters Joan Steele and another, two sons Thomas and Paul, parents Mr. and Mrs I W Machamar one sister and three brothers and three grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2 pm Wednesday December 2 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Rev Walter Lack officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Greenwood Funeral Home in charge.
Theilen Freidns Ben Theilen died in Clark Field Minnesota on December 4. Graveside funeral services will be held at Le Mars City Cemetery on Tuesday December 7 at 2 p.m. Rev QO M Schultz of Montevideo Minnesota will officiate under direction of Mauer funeral home. Theilen was born September 9 1876 in Minnesota and was a retired farmer. Survivors include a brother and a sister.
Friday afternoon an accident occurred at the intersection of 1st street and highway 74 north when a Jas truck collided with the car of Josephine Homan of Alton. The Toman car sustained 200 dollars in damage and the Tlarms pickup 250 dollars.
Clara J K Garding transfers Lots 1 and 2 Block 13 Struble for one dollar to Regina Garding. John Garding transfers household furniture and appliances to Regina Garding for one dollar. Miss Viley and Miss Evelyn Peterson of Sioux City visited Mrs. Elizabeth Smith on Saturday.
Agnes Johnson of 121 2nd Street Northeast Le Mars died December 6 1959 after a two month illness. Born January 13 1900 near Marcus she taught homemaking at Onawa Buffalo Center and Harlan and studied at Iowa State Teachers College Colorado State University. Funeral December 9 at St John American Lutheran with Rev L L Belk. Survivors include siblings Edith Johnson Hubert Johnson George Johnson and others. Burial at Am shersh cemetery. R Bruce Bedell named Who's Who at Morningside College. Mrs A J McIntosh and Mrs Clifford Eyres associated travel Le Mars to La Porte City.
Le Mars Bulldogs defeated South Sioux City Cardinals 39 to 36 to improve their season to 1 1 as Rod Robertson and Jeb Archer led the Cardinals with 14 points while Rich Vanderloo and Jack Renken starred for Le Mars. The night featured a tight first half and a late fourth quarter surge by Le Mars to pull away at the end.
Sheriff Frank Scholer received a complaint about an incident at Ovens last night when a bowling pin was hurled through a picture window in the home of Joe Hoffman. The pin was later recovered at Mrs. Joe Kemp’s home across the street where two pins served as driveway ornaments. A suspect is known and an arrest is expected.
Mr and Mrs Leon De Raad lof Ireton announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Audrey to Gene Dominick son of Mr and Mrs Walter Dominick pat Struble law The wedding is set for December 27 1959 at 7 30 PM at St Pauls Jadheran Church at Ire The couple will reside in Waverly Iowa where he attends Wartburg College.
A Saturday crash at 12 15 pm at the intersection of highway 75 and first street northwest caused 50 dollars in damage to Curtis Helton’s 1957 Ford and 20 dollars to Arlen Terpenning’s 1949 Ford. Police report states Helton’s car stayed in the outside lane over the yellow line while Terpenning crowded and clipped him during a turn.
Girl Scout Troop 375 visited Veale Lumber Co with Mrs Byron Jeys Mrs Ben Hahn and Mrs Norman Sother guiding. Mr Hirsig demonstrated power machines and hand tools for two hours as the girls work on wood badges creating bird feeders and wood carvings for Christmas gifts. Refreshments followed at the Botker hone.

The 1959 Census of Agriculture is about half complete in the area. Acting Field Director Percy R. Millard of the Census Bureau Kansas City regional office announced strong farmer cooperation and expressed hopes to finish canvassing within ten days. He noted field canvassing costs depend on farmer participation and urged remaining farmers to complete the questionnaire for quick publication and lower final costs.
An exhibit of original etchings engravings and lithographs is on view at Westmar College Art Gallery through December 23. The show is on loan from the George Binet Collection of Brimfield Massachusetts and titled Four Centuries of French Prints.
