Will Farmers Be Forced To Pay Social Security Tax

The Eisenhower administration backs extending the social security tax to millions of farmers starting January 1, 1955. Farmers with gross income under 400 dollars avoid coverage. those with 400 to 799 dollars but net under 400 are also exempt. The change adds retirement benefits and more paperwork for self employed farmers.

Tooth-ache Supreme? Mastodon Tooth Recovered North of Le Mars

Chauncey C. Connill recovered a mastodon tooth from the Wiktgen gravel pit on the Groethen Bros. farm north of Le Mars. Sally Greethen posed with the tooth for a photo, then relinquished the prize. The Globe-Post linked the find to a hairy mammoth that roamed North America up to two million years ago.

Farmers face new social security tax rules and benefits

The 3 percent self employment tax applies on gross or net income with special provisions for farmers. If gross is 1700 and net 31000, tax options are 50 or 30, with higher credit. For gross over 1800, tax can be on net or half gross. Farmers with rents and workers gain extended benefit eligibility, and the benefit-eligibility income cap rises from 75 to 1200 per month. Coverage begins Jan 1 1955. first farmer payments due April 1956 alongside 1955 taxes.
