Plymouth County assessors report mixed results on 1953 property values. Real estate totals rise while personal property and livestock deprecate. Bridge damage from the flood may drive up levies, offsetting some tax cuts as towns and schools adjust budgets and assessments.
A heavy wind and rain storm with a small twister struck around one o'clock on Wednesday. It damaged telephone wires and power lines, toppled trees including on the Albert Sprik farm, and scattered debris across the public school yard, cemetery, and city hall. Several residents reported large trees down and grain bins toppled. crops were flattened and there was two inches of rain with light hail but no serious damage reported.
Lena Ebrecht, aged 89, marked her birthday July 30 at her address 327 Ind Ave S W with daughters visiting and a decorated cake. The Ebrecht family, longtime Remsen and Le Mars residents, were early community pioneers. Mrs. Ebrecht has one child and is aunt to Mrs. Will Mooney. Separately, Harvey Huggenberges and Jean Woolworth obtained a marriage license at Woodbury County courthouse last week.
Congressman Charles Hoeven told reporters during recess that many in Congress fear mounting debt. He cited 1940 3.2 billion, 1952 62.1 billion, and a 9 billion hole, urging constituents to pressure for cost cuts and restraint on pet projects. He warned of looming Far East settlement and noted Allied recognition of China and expanded trade amid Korea tensions.
Funeral services for Ernest William Paulson 71 were set for 2 30 p m at the Kingsley Methodist church with burial in Kingsley cemetery. He was born August 25 1880 in Sweden and lived in Sioux City Arthur Plymouth County. Survived by Rosa Sweed wife a daughter Verona and son Verle plus four brothers and two sisters. The county’s humid summer weather continues but corn prospects improve.
Congressman Charles B Hoeven announced a public meeting with the Omaha district Engineer corps of Army Engineers and Soil Conservation Service representatives of the Department of Agriculture to discuss Floyd river valley flood control. The August 20 session in Les Mars invites interested citizens to participate, with a detailed letter to follow.
The past week recorded July 30 to August 2 with temperatures of 80 63, 54 70, 97 71, and 92 68 inches of precipitation totaled 2.10. January through August 1983 shows monthly totals. overall 22.59 inches, 5.42 above normal. Normal is 17.17 inches. every month except May ran above normal.
W C T U members and friends gathered Thursday afternoon at the Baptist church for an annual picnic led by Mrs Cligg. The program included a devotional by Mr Herzig on Responsibility, a Scripture reading by Mrs Von Berg, a Bible study on Justification by Mrs Landreth, and prayers by Mrs Lemke. Officers were reelected, and reports on the year's literature distributed and Bible chapters read were presented. A picnic lunch followed, centered by two decorated cakes donated by Mr McManus and his daughter, with special music by Mrs Clagg and Mrs James Hoyt. Ronald F. Penne, 29, of LeMars, pleaded guilty July 17 to grand larceny and was sentenced by District Judge George W. Prichard in Stony City to five years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison. He took $100 from a rooming house in Sious City and was arrested on Harold Rafteseth’s complaint. The court delayed sentencing to align the larceny term with a revoked seven year parole, parole violation and theft runs concurrently with the five year term.

Funeral services for Mrs J J Smith 63 who died Thursday at her Union County South Dakota farm home were held at 2 PM Sunday at Wesley Methodist Church in Akron. Burial followed in Riverside cemetery Akron.

Sheriff Frank Schoter said the past weekend was his first in a long time without a call. The only excitement involved Ronald Parker, 18, held for New Orleans, who faced rope threats. Parker needed dental work as three teeth were severely decayed, and the sheriff arranged for extractions with a dentist.

No wedding date set. Miss McClintock a Le Mars High School and Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing graduate. Mr Carlson a Central High School graduate.
Mrs Ellen Tracey aged 67 died Friday at a Sanh Gate California hospital after a long sickness. Born September 1 1885 in Westfield she married Philip Tracey at St Patrick's Akron February 11 1907. Survivors include husband two sons Gerald and William both of South Gate, two daughters Mrs A W Adam of Hobson Montana and Mrs Harold Rand of Grand Forks ND, a brother Thomas J Conway of Sioux City, three sisters and ten grandchildren. The body was taken to Larkin Funeral home.
Mrs Olga Briese died at her daughter Hattie Reich's home in Le Mars after a week of illness and a stroke. Born in Germany, she was about 80 and lived in Loretta Nebraska. Funeral services were planned for Tuesday at the Horse Funeral Home in Albion. Survivors include two daughters, Hattie Reich and another daughter, and son Walter of Loretta Nebraska.
Joe Galles born September 2 1864 in Luxembourg emigrated to the United States as a young man. He lived in Remsen until moving to a Spencer nursing home and was a retired farmer. Survived by two daughters Martha Mrs Lawrence Shea of Remsen and Loretta of Gary and sons Art Galles Pauihina and another survivor. 27 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral at St Marys Catholic church Remsen with burial in the church cemetery under Fisch funeral home direction. Rev George Theobald officiated. Pallbearers were grandchildren. Wake held Saturday and Sunday nights.

A Sioux City area murder case unfolds as Emmet Dillon, 51, is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Mrs Emmet Dillon a mother of five. Dee Stockburger 38 is held for questioning in Spencer Iowa after a drunken fight at a lakeside hotel. Dillon allegedly attacked his wife at a hotel room while Stockburger testified he tried to escape as Dillon beat his wife. Coroner reports death from a crushed windpipe amid a scene of broken whisky bottles and blood. police say Dillon assaulted Stockburger as well.
Le Mars Municipal Band concert scheduled for Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in Foster Park features a program of marches waltzes overtures and songs. Soloist Mic Varentort performs Path of Honor and a finale of The Star Spangled Banner. News note asks readers to send items to The Globe-Post.
The annual appointments at Sacred Heart Hospital show several moves. Sister Mary Cyril O.S.F. becomes Superior and Administrator at Sacred Heart Le Mars, while Sister Frances Clare O.S.F. departs for Navier Hospital in Dubuque. New additions include Sister Mary Laetitia, Sister Mary Lea, Sister M Teresa Ann, and Sister Mary Julian, joining existing staff with others reassigned to Dubuque and Mount St. Francis Dubuque.
The Wisconsin National Guard departs for Camp McCoy near LaCrosse for a week long training. About 300 guardsmen from LeMar and other cities participate in the summer camp with dawn to midnight schedules including early reveille and late curfew.
Anasement near Maurice Saturday August 1 Ronald Stuser drove a 1939 Chevrolet rolling his car at First Street NL WL and Third Ave. Injured were Melvin Keene driving a 1949 Ford and Manx L Wetherell with Pierson Ia. Damage to a 1952 International truck and Wetherell’s truck totaling $250. Another accident at Second Ave on Saturday August 1 involved Fred Multon Deles Fort Dodge in a 1952 Chevrolet and Joseph Jr Vateght in a 194? Chevrolet resulting in about $400 damage to Deles’s car.
