Trial of Bert Rollinger in Des Moines on tax evasion

The Bert Rollinger tax case opened in Des Moines with Mrs. Chara Mieras detailing transactions totaling 16805 dollars he allegedly failed to report as income. Murphey Rites Held for Ida Murphey of Sioux City

Mrs Ida Murphey 73 of Stoun City died at her daughter's home after about ten weeks illness. She was born April 3 1880 in Illinois and lived in Kingsley Onawa and Sioux City. Funeral services were held at 6 p m Saturday in Morningside with burial in Kingsley cemetery. Survivors include her daughter Mrs Hla Murphey and several siblings. Cpl Kenneth F Ludwigs, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Ludwigs, arrived on the west coast aboard Marine Lynx.

Anniversary Supper At St Johns Church

The Rev Theodore Hilgeman, professor at Mission House Seminary Sheboygan and Asia missionary for 17 years, spoke at three anniversary programs at St Johns Evangelical Reformed Church. He described Chinese village life and school routines to the congregation and school children, with an evening supper recounting a Chinese home life. Mrs Feed Utech discussed St Johns 70 years of progress during Family Night. Pastor Straube closed with a look ahead to the next 70 years.

Fishing in Artificial Lakes Opens in Iowa Parks

Iowa fishermen are reminded that all state owned artificial lakes are open to fishing except Rock Creek Lake Mine Eagles Lake and Geode Lake. These lakes have been stocked and will be closed until populations are established. Parks are open to the public with most park roads usable though some soft roadbeds remain. Visitors may walk into the areas and artificial lakes in state parks follow the same angling rules with a 10 30 p m closing time.

Mrs Mieras remained for rebuttal testimony after completing her session while Sheriff Frank Scholer and County Attorney Morse Hooreman awaited to testify. Defense remarks hint Rollingar will testify in his own defense, a move that could invite heavy grilling. He is in Des Moines and may testify. federal attorneys await any surprise move and question why he did not seek mercy from the court.

County paving bids due May 5 at Ames

County Engineer E E Nebon announced bids will be received May 5 at the State highway commission office in Ames for two paving projects. One covers the Westmar college road from Central Ave to the gas house corner and two miles south to connect the blacktop. The second paves between Kingsley and the Hinton Kingsley blacktop.

Tulpenfeest Tulip Caravan to Visit Le Mars May 8

The 13th canal tulip caravan from Orange City will perform in Le Mars at 2 10 pm Friday as part of the annual May Tulip Festival running since 1936. The parade features Dutch costumes a band the Tulip Queen and attendants plus Klompen dancers in wooden shoes with a 15 minute program. The festival draws thousands to Orange City and rivals Pella and Holland Michigan for tulip displays. Local notable notices include residents hosting guests and a collection of year 1953 model cars from Le Mars and Akron listed with names and towns.

The 38 voice Westmar College Chorus, led by Professor Larry Day, finished a ten day tour of Nebraska Missouri Kansas and Oklahoma. A home concert at College Church is set for Sunday May 3 at eight. Highway 75 crash near 1st Street Northwest injures driver

An accident occurred on highway 75 at 1st Street Northwest on Saturday April 25 around 4 30 p m. James Tanner driving a 1946 Chevrolet was northbound when a 1941 Chevrolet driven by Alfred Nischke pulled onto the highway. Guardsmen Weathered Slushy April Training Bivouac

Mrs James Ryan of Le Mars dies at 64 in Waterloo

Mrs James Ryan a lifelong Le Mars resident aged 64 died at St Francis Hospital Waterloo at 3 30 am today following illness from heart trouble. Born Elizabeth Ahlers May 3 1889 in Plymouth County she would have been 64 on May 3. She married James Ryan February 14 1918 at St Josephs Church. Funeral services Wednesday at St Josephs Catholic Church with Fr Fisch officiating. burial in Calvary Cemetery under Wiltgen Luedtke. Survivors include her son James and daughters Sister Elizabeth Ann Agned Herbert Ludwig Eleanor Ryan and others. She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society and Catholic Daughters of America will recite the rosary Tuesday evening.

The Good Will Week canvass by Cub Scouts and Explorers secured clothing furniture and shoes for Good Will Industries with 100 percent town coverage by Monday evening. Despite efforts many homes were missed. calls urged residents to leave materials with name and address. Trucks will canvass north Le Mars on April 28 and south on April 29. The Sioux City plant expansion will boost handicapped employment increasing demand for usable donations. Oethen and Albert Win Farm Degree

Alwayne Oethen and Earl Albert were awarded State Farmer degrees at the April 7 Des Moines convention. The degree, given to 2 percent of the state membership totaling 8 698, is the highest state honor. The brothers applied last fall and earned it for past farming experience and future plans.
