Fire Destroys Hay Barn on Lons Worth Farm Near Remsen

A hay barn at Lons Worth farm four miles south of Remsen burned Tuesday after a fire started in the afternoon. Fire dept arrived around 1:35 and found the blaze out of control, destroying electrical lines and wiring. Five tons of hay burned, no livestock harmed, and embers reignited an hour later prompting a second extinguishing effort to soak adjacent structures.

Funeral rites for Vinaumuir Stains at Nebon-Berger

Funeral services were held for Vinaumuir Stains a 28 year old farmer from Hinton found dead Thursday at the Nebon-Berger funeral home in Sioux City. Homer Watkins officiated with graveside rites at Memorial Park Cemetery conducted by the Eagles lodge. Stains who led seven ventures north of Linton was found in a field near Highway 12 in Plymouth County. Deputy Sheriff James Mertes said the farmer committed suicide by running exhaust fumes into his car.

Richard Eyres party draws nearly sixty youths

Nearly 60 young people from Plymouth county and surrounding areas attended the Richard Eyres party sponsored by the Rural Young People's group. The Buena Vista county Rural Young People’s club and high school season guests joined in square dancing mixers and games and enjoyed a delicious lunch.

One Foot In Heaven to Open Le Mar Commencement

Le Mar high school begins its 1954 commencement with a Tuesday and Wednesday presentation of the senior form of the Hartzell Spencer play One Foot In Heaven. Matinee shows for pupils at 9 30 am and 1 45 pm Tuesday. public performance at 8 00 pm Wednesday. The play follows a minister's family in a small Lews community during early 20th century, based on a book and recalled by the minister's son, now a journalist and author. The eighteen member cast is led by Jim Price and Marin Kipster as the Reverend and Mrs William Spence. Mrs Alaska directs with Virginia Down as assistant. Tickets are on sale from student salesmen or at the box office before Wednesday evening show. no reserved seats. The seniors hope for broad community turnout to start commencement activities.

A A Montagne died Sunday evening at Akron Community Hospital after a short illness. He was born September 1, 1903 in Beresford South Dakota and ran a recreation parlor in Akron for 30 years.
