A 1949 survey of over 300 Iowa high school graduates from 45 schools finds 27.5 percent now living outside the state and 37 percent remaining in their hometown communities. About 31 percent left their home towns yet stay in Iowa, while 3.8 percent are in the armed forces.
Herbert L. Yates of Akron was granted L. S. patent no. 2,740,664 on April 3, 1956 for a lawn spraying device. The wheeled carriage carries a downward hood with a fabric curtain to confine spray to ground level, preventing drift onto vegetation. The hood can be removed for conventional hand spraying, and the system uses a motor driven pump with spray heads along a hooded boom. Application filed July 16, 1955.
The Union Township Consolidated School will hold its annual Kindergarten Round-Up on Friday April 27 1956 at 2 00 PM at the school. All prospective kindergarten students and their mothers are asked to attend to help plan the 1956 57 school year. Children must have turned six before November 15 1956 to be accepted. A short program and refreshments are planned.
Mr and Mrs John Hodgson of Keighley England arrived in New York on the Queen s last voyage. They are visiting Mrs Hodgson s sister and family before planning to make Le Mars their future home. Hodgson natives of England.
The Walmer Post No. 241 Drum and Bugle Corps will perform at the Ninth District American Legion convention in Spencer on April 23. It will be their first show of the year, per secretary Frank Wilhelmi. New officers will be elected, with Fritz Hall nominated for Ninth District Commander. The district covers thirteen Northwest Iowa counties.
R L Weidauer urges farmers to notify Plymouth county ASC in Le Mars Iowa if they have sown wheat without an allotment to have their ground measured. This ensures a wheat marketing permit to sell or dispose. Check spring wheat as well and submit information by May 1 1956.
Farm Bureau Women’s Day will be held Wednesday April 25 in Eagles Hall basement with a noon luncheon. Guest speaker Mrs H Brewster a native Hawaiian and Congregational minister’s wife from Kingsley will speak. Activities include Union Consolidated School sextette, a flute sale by Norm Kehrberg, performances by Garfield township girls Beverly Beeghly and Judy Mon, a Washington township skit, and Westfield township style show. Committees handle arrangements. noon luncheon priced at 1.25. Reservations via cards or Farm Bureau office.
Wire report states Roy Rush longtime Northwestern depot agent in Chicago and northwest Iowa died after collapsing in a cafe in Omaha while awaiting heart treatment. He resigned last fall and his family moved to Cox City. Interment was in his former home area. Survived by his wife and young daughter Sandra.

A long illness claimed George Haggin a former Kingsley resident born 1870 in Yankton South Dakota. Funeral at 2:30 p m Friday at Dickinee funeral home Kingsley with Rev Everett Major officiating. Survivors include a son Gordon in California.
Suzanne and Diane Zimmer, twin daughters of Bill Zimmer of Le Mars, are among fifty Iowa girls awarded Squear nurse scholarships by the Iowa division of the American Cancer Society. Each will receive tuition, fees, books, and uniforms not to exceed $500 for three years at St Josephs College of Nursing in Sioux City beginning this fall.
The grand jury charged Leslie Smith of Le Mars and Fred Brimmer of Remsen with keeping liquor on the premises. Smith pleaded guilty and was fined $300 plus costs by Judge T. E. Klaw. Brimmer awaits arraignment as a no true bill was returned on bootlegging charges against both bartenders.
Ross manager of Buds Super Valu in Le Mars says highway 75 detours for widening will not stop service. A blacktop route from Hammer’s Corner to the store will direct customers to the north parking lot. The store will stay open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week to serve shoppers.
Marcus mayor Mr Means dismissed rumors that the city limits water sales to farmers due to a shortage. He stated Marcus has ample water, sells to farms at the going price, and even to districts eleven miles south. He noted 40,000 gallons daily were previously taken by two farmers and urged farmers to come for water.
Clarence O Wiks 41 of Hawarden and Robert Stanley Russell of Sioux Falls pleaded guilty to false drawing and uttering checks in Le Mars district court. Judge Klay sentenced both to seven year terms in the Fort Madison state penitentiary.
George Koenig a lifelong Le Mars resident and former Rex zl Drus Store owner died at home on April 17 after illness. Born February 6 1863 in Harrisburg PA he moved to LeMars as an infant and later earned a Ph D from Northwestern University. He held civic posts including Chamber of Commerce and school board president and belonged to Masons Eastern Star and Elks. He married Lyle Fraser in 1911 and is survived by wife Lyle son Robert of Los Angeles sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services April 20 at Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church with burial in Le Mars City Cemetery.
Local business figures led by Roge Rogers secretary of the Chamber of Commerce consider a public prayer gathering to solicit rain. Aiming for May 1 the proposal invites suggestions and any additional input from the community to address the drought.

David Hawkins of Le Mars was named one of 196 Iowa FFA members to receive the Iowa Farmer Degree at the 28th Iowa FFA Convention in Waterloo. Harold and Mrs Thompson of Kingstes marked their 25th wedding anniversary with about 50 guests at home on Sun April 15. Roland Thompson served as master of ceremonies and family members performed. Mrs Richard Schutz and others organized games and desserts were served in the dining room. The Thompsons have four sons Rolland Harold Jr Richard and Duane at home. The plate glass on the north front of the Hub and Phmouh street was replaced by Milton Gengter the proprietor after it had been cracked for some time.
Westfield Community School District will elect a board of directors on Monday April 30 1956 from 12 noon to 7 40 PM. Nominating papers must be filed with the County Superintendent of Schools in Le Mars by 12 noon Friday April 20. Voting will take place at Westfield Consolidated School building Sioux Township Hancock Township Hall and the rural school building District No 4 Westfield Township.
Representative Ed Oppedahl of Renwick Iowa, member of the Iowa Legislature tax study committee, spoke at the Plymouth County Conference on Education in Le Mars High School. A new Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop was presented to Father J A W Behrens superintendent of Gehlen School at the Gehlen Gym on Wednesday.
