Le Mars Gardeners Fight Frost and Replant Efforts

Local gardeners assess Wednesday morning frost damage across Le Mars with beans scorched and tomatoes saved. They plan replanting and forecasters predict a dry spell with little rain. American Legion Auxiliary poppy sale to aid veterans programs is announced for Friday and Saturday.

A marriage license was issued here Thursday to James Sauer age 22 of Sioux City and Patricia Huebner age 22 of Akron. Earlier Tuesday a license was issued to Arlene Ann Mayrose age 23 and Richard Sheehan age 23, both of Lincoln Nebraska. Mrs Irene Honnold returned Sunday from a two week visit with her sister and husband Mr and Mrs Bernard Mertz of Lima Ohio.

Four seniors share top honors in Le Mars class of 1963

Four Le Mars Community seniors graduated with perfect 4000 grade averages. Triple valedictorians are June Mulder Marilyn Schmidt and Mary Jane Truesdell with Judy Benem as salutatorian at 3800. The awards were announced Thursday during center class day in Central auditorium. The four top honorees include families from Le Mars Seney Brundville Merrill Transvaal South Africa. Other honors included Lions club and Rotary scholarships, EOT and citizenship awards to Dan Tone June Mulder, and a class ring presented to Victor Cloete, the first Le Mars foreign student. The Bark annual dedication was announced and the former Ficker Garage property was purchased by the Pews for future business use.

Baccalaureate for 113 Le Mars Seniors Sunday Evening

Le Mars Community schools seniors will hear Rev James D Ransom at 8 pm in the public school gymnasium for a baccalaureate service. Louise Hagen will play pomp and circumstance, with Judy Ransom solo and Brahms Create In Me O God by the a cappella choir directed by Gerhard Moeller.

How It Waz Official Low Temperature Frost Damage County

Thursday morning dropped to 28 degrees matching the prior record. Frost damaged corn beans alfalfa and gardens countywide though Le Mars escaped frost. Beans must be replanted and frost tops cut from alfalfa to spur new growth. Sorghum and corn replanting delayed until damage assessed. Also noted Iowa State reported Reeves pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated receiving 300 dollar fine 60 day license suspension three months in jail. Temperatures rose to mid 60s and forecasts call for warmer windy weather with upper 70s expected Friday.

Open house at Plymouth county home invites area residents

Area residents are invited to an open house at the Plymouth county home east of Le Mars on highway 3 Sunday afternoon May 25 between 1 and 4:30. Mr and Mrs George Porter steward and matron and Plymouth County Board of Supervisors will greet visitors. The home houses 25 county patients and 25 mental patients, is inspected by state fire marshal state board of control and grand jury, with Gerald Hemphill county welfare director assisting.

Mrs Gerdes Killed In Fall From Car Near Le Mars

Mrs. Ben Gerdes 57 of 509 8th St. SW died Wednesday night when she fell from the car she rode in as it veered off the highway into a ditch north of Le Mars. Driver Herb Koerner said he was blinded by oncoming lights. Koerner charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The 1952 Ford was lightly damaged. Medical Examiner Dr. Sherman Lindell said Gerdes had a broken neck and possible wheel contact occurred. Police investigated with Patrolman Richard Helmers and Capt. Jim Hoeck assisting.
