Two seven year old girls order two ice cream cones at a Le Mars restaurant. They have five pennies and a nickel, ask for a dip in each cone. A nearby businessman adds a dime and orders two dips, turning the moment into a small act of generosity and gratitude.
The weekly weather and crop bulletin by county extension director Arlie A. Pierson reports the north edge of the county needs rain while other areas are not severely affected. Pastures and hay are poor in the north half, corn is rolling, oats yields will be low to moderate, and corn borer activity is past peak with some treatment underway. Replanted corn shows good growth and clean fields. A separate incident notes a $300 damage accident on highway 3 on Thursday morning when a westbound car driven by Erma Fisher struck a post and fence. location of the crash was not reported.
Frank Ulish announced a coordinated effort by the state safety division and the American Legion to distribute 120000 "Slow Down and Live" pamphlets at 450 port of entry towns on Iowa borders. The USAF Recruiting service announced a large group of young men will leave July 8 as the Siouxland Buddy Flight. Each recruit will be fully qualified for their chosen technical training before enlisting and all will begin basic training together at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Additional applications are being accepted at the USAF Recruiting office in the Post Office building, Sioux City.

Mona R. Bomgaars of LeMars received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in June, believed to be the first LeMars woman physician. A 1956 LeMars High School graduate, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Westmar College in 1960 and received the Merck Manual Award plus a scholastic citation. She will begin a rotating internship at Wayne County General Hospital in Eloise, Michigan, on July 1.
11 year old Dave Stoos and his Le Mars sponsors the Jaycees prepare for the Sioux City preliminary to the Akron Ohio national derby. He has worked on the racer for over six months with adult advice allowed but all work by the boy. Car must weigh under 250 pounds and be under 80 inches long with cost under 20 dollars. Inspection Saturday at 8 am. heats begin 8:30 am with finals around 1 pm.
Frank Summerside, Austin Public Schools elementary music supervisor, is named assistant professor of music at Westmar College. He has six years in Austin and has taught at Winona State University and Austin Junior College, plus Eastern New Mexico State College. Summerside holds a BMus from St Olaf and an MMEd from Colorado. he has published works with Ginn and Augsburg. He replaces Larry Day on leave.
Statewide appeal seeks employer cooperation to grant two weeks extra vacation this summer for Iowa National Guardsmen to attend intensified training at local armories. Officials say such training tests skills and maintains unit efficiency, with appreciation for employers’ sacrifices as guardsmen serve the state. Laura Hagar of Le Mars and daughter of Verna Hagar will undergo knee surgery Friday at St Luke Methodist Hospital School of Practical Nursing Cedar Rapids. She will be a patient on the fourth floor west and is expected to graduate from the school in September.
General rains measured from .58 to 1.30 inches eased dry conditions in Sioux County and nearby towns including Le Mars Akron Sioux Center Orange City Hawarden Remsen Kingsley and Sheldon. Gusts up to 65 mph hit Sioux City as a late evening storm cooled a hot day. Morning low 63 degrees. noon heat returned with 90s in the afternoon. Washington visitor Jim Kempker and two sons arrived for a 10 day stay with Kempker and Lorenzen families.
The Washington Community Facilities Administration approved a 31 100 000 loan for Westmar College student housing. Ground broke on three projects on June 2 for a women's residence hall, two men’s dormitories, and married students’ apartments. Contracts announced June 14 awarded to Roth and Associates and Holtz Construction for the dorms and apartments.
