Ford dealer Whelan Motors of Le Mars was named a distinguished Ford dealership and will be honored at a Des Moines luncheon for performance in 1962. The firm also won Ford's Gold Truck leadership award for selling only trucks in its trading area last year.
Evan R Hoorneman, son of Morse and Mrs Hoorneman, received a bachelor of laws degree at Harvard University’s 312th commencement in Cambridge Massachusetts on Thursday June 13. About 3000 graduates were honored with degrees including nearly 1000 BA recipients. The Hoorneman family attended the ceremonies.
A son was born June 5 at Lutheran hospital in Sioux City to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Doe Ring. Mrs Doe Ring is the former Glenna Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams.
The contract to construct several blocks of sanitary sewers in eastern Le Mars was awarded Tuesday to Walker Ditching and Plumbing for 11 659.50. Two bids were opened at 11 am with Lundell Construction Co absent. The low bid came in nearly nine percent under the engineer's estimate of 12 761.50 and the project cost will be assessed to benefited property owners.
Richard Lang of Le Mars won 75 dollars at Grotewold s Chevrolet open house by guessing the correct weight of Dwayne Grotewold and the firm s 17 employees. Lang is a drywall finisher who has returned from Colorado and is married to Carol Nilles Remsen. They have a daughter, Christie. Mrs. Cecil Geret of Lovelock Nevada will visit the Wells family in Remsen.
At the Iowa annual midsummer conference in Des Moines on June 3 and 4, county Farm Bureau delegates adopted a property tax relief resolution. It says that since the 60th General Assembly failed to fund property tax replacement, all increases in school budgets and local government costs must be absorbed by property owners for two years, amounting to about 28 million dollars annually and a 7 percent yearly rise. It urges school boards and local governments to resist budget increases for two years or until a satisfactory solution is found. Vernon Ren, Plymouth county Farm Bureau president, presented the recommendations.
A field day near Sutherland on Friday June 25 will feature hay wafering machinery demonstrations from 12:30 to 3:30 PM. Dale Hall of Iowa State University will discuss hay wafering and storage with equipment including a flail forage harvester windrow tunnel and hay wafering machine. Storage benefits and reduced hand labor will be highlighted along with fertilizer trials and forage variety reports.
Funeral services for T. E. Klay 70 district court judge who died Sunday in an Orange City hospital will be at 1 30 p m Wednesday at the American Reformed church. Burial will be in Orange City cemetery. He was admitted to the Town bar in 1915 and took the oath as district judge January 28 1955. He served as vice consul to The Netherlands and was active in civic groups. Survivors include his widow a son Earl three daughters a brother three sisters and 12 grandchildren.
A son and a daughter were born to Rev. William Green and Mrs. Green of Waconda NL on June 5. Michael Ramsey weighed 6 pounds 3 ounces and Frederick Bryant 5 pounds 4 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. T Hale Parker of Le Mars. Mrs. Green is Janet Parker. A building permit was issued to Le Mars Savings Bank for a new $160,000 bank at the corner of 1st Ave and 1st St NE. Herman Vander Well building a garage at 454th Ave SW for $500.
Announce Merrill has routes for swimming with lessons for Brunsville children starting Wednesday June 26. Swimmers enter water at 10 15 am and pay 2 50 for bus per person at Farmers State Bank Merrill or Genes Processing Plant Brunsville. All swimmers must register in Le Mars with a 2 cost to Le Mars park board. Bus east of Merrill 9 15 Neptune 9:40 Merrill 11 45 Neptune noon return. Bus west picks up Merrill 9 15 No 7 at 9 25 No 7 and 3 Brunsville 11 30 Brunsville noon Merrill. Youngsters may board at route points.
Robert R Shepherd of Le Mars is among 18 students invited to a summer mission program in inner city New York City. The project runs June 26 to August 16, with duties in Manhattan and Brooklyn churches including vacation schools day camps and Sunday schools. Participants study Bible topics and church mission, living at a Brooklyn hospital.
Alarm sounded Tuesday afternoon as Lampert's lumber yard battled a grass fire touching off a pile of treated fence posts. The blaze was brought under control before it could threaten other lumber stocks.
Moderate temperatures and partly cloudy skies persist into Tuesday with morning lows near 50 and a Monday high not fully stated. Intermittent showers and thundershowers are possible tonight and Wednesday remains partly overcast with little temperature change. Fifteen drivers paid $1 fines in the mayor's court for overtime parking in the business district between June 8 and 17. Larry Monk of Sioux City was fined $14 for improper use of registration plates. A charge was filed May 31 by the highway patrol. In another state case Donald R. Aardema of Doon was fined $19 for no safety chains. charge made June 14.
