The coming session could see a flurry of public attention as business groups push a Sunday closing measure, with other big issues like liquor by the drink taxes home rule and death penalty repeal competing for space. A Democratic governor may veto a sales tax hike, affecting his re election. Reapportionment and the Shaff plan return for approval before the next election.
Two Sioux City men Richard Lottinker and Robert J. Prince paid 104 on three charges each for resisting arrest failing to comply with a lawful order and intoxication. Kenneth J. Gries fined 14 for failure to yield after Dec 30. Pew’s Parade paid 10 for parking on a restricted street. Nick Fifers Akron paid 9 for a faulty muffler in Jan 1 charge.
The Sentinel notes a five cent first class postage boost and report no spike in last weekend mail. Stamps demand is brisk with five cent stamps common and one cent stamps supplementing four cent stocks. Marian Dorothy Parker and James Paul Grover announce engagement and June wedding plans. Grover is son of Paul Grover Cresco. Parker teaches home economics at Washington High Cherokee. Grover studies veterinary medicine at Iowa State. Mary Lou Stephenson, formerly of Le Mars, dies after an accident in New York, with services in Le Mars at St Joseph Church. Survivors include eight siblings. burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Le Mars records its first New Year’s baby Dale Feward Palmer born at 9 33 pm Friday at Sacred Pearl hospital weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces and 19 inches long. Christine Ann Hoffman born 7 am Sunday at Sacred Hearts hospital weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces and 20 inches. DADS are Donald Palmer and Jack Hoffman. moms Janice Hill and Mrs. Hoffman. Grandparents listed. both families from Le Mars. Christine Ann wins 15 quarts
Westmar college observes Sophomore Week with Rolland H. Osbourne, Denver Secret Service chief, delivering chapel talks on Counterfeit Church and The Responsibility of the Secret Service. Osbourne, a Nebraska native, joined the Secret Service in 1940 and has served in Omaha, Oklahoma City, Denver, and other major offices. His daughter Linda is a Westmar sophomore majoring in music.
The day brought mild sunshine and light NW breeze, temps reaching about 50 degrees by afternoon. After a gloomy weekend with drizzle, clear skies return with temperatures easing to around 37 Sunday and 25 overnight, forecasting fair conditions into tonight and Tuesday.
A district court suit on behalf of five year old Klark Allen Bogh seeks 75000 dollars. His mother Peggy Kay Bogh says he was injured August 3 1962 when entangled in a newly installed feed conveying auger on a farm. Defendants are John Harmelink doing business as Hawarden Cement Block and Silo Co Dick Bronkhorst and Bogh Bros a partnership. The complaint alleges negligent installation by failing to shield the unit and leaving the auger end exposed enabling entanglement.
Governor-elect Harold Hughes push to dry Iowa spurs Plymouth County officials to vow strict enforcement of liquor laws. County Attorney William Surges and Sheriff Frank Scholer unite to urge cities to uphold rules on illegal sales while private clubs retain bottles for personal use. Community reports indicate a drying trend and clubs expanding storage to meet demand.
James Bowers of Bowers Clothing store was named first vice president of the Iowa Retail Clothiers association at the Des Moines meeting. He heads regional retail efforts and strengthens ties with local merchants.
Le Mars Police Department annual 1962 report compiled by Sgt Joseph Sutton records six traffic fatalities in Plymouth County, down from 13 in 1961, with 121 reportable accidents in 1962 and 122 the year before. Traffic counts rose overall, reckless driving and speeding figures varied, parking violations dropped dramatically, and only two OMVI charges occurred in 1962.

Calendar lists adult night school at Central building on January 7. January 8 features LCHS versus Storm Lake and Westmar versus Buena Vista. January 9 offers Plymouth County Association for Retarded Children at 8 pm and a Sweden travel movie at 8 pm in Central auditorium, Rotary club sponsors. January 3 has LCHS Band Parents in Central activity room. Westmar opera shows on January 9 and 11 at Thoren auditorium. January 11 also lists Gehlen versus Sergeant Bluff and LCHS versus Sioux City East. Westmar opera continues January 12, with LCHS one act plays at 8 pm in Central auditorium. Second semester registration for Westmar is January 15.
