Babson Sees 1973 Labor Tensions Shape Economy Tone

Babson Reports forecasts labor conflicts will drive 1973, with 4 million workers in new contracts across rubber, cement, construction, apparel, retail, services, electrical, foods, and key unions like the Teamsters and United Auto Workers. Inflation control, monetary policy, and admin pressure could curb wage and price rises to about 6 percent, while industrial production may rise about 5 percent if disruptions stay limited.

Assessor explains what taxpayers should expect

Plymouth county residents are reminded that the 1973 assessment time for personal property will soon be here. Household personal property remains exempt. Business properties will be assessed by the county assessor and commercial owners will receive a 20-S form and tax credit instructions with a Feb 15 1973 return deadline. Dog licenses require rabies certificates and listing for dogs three months old by Jan 1. Please turn to page 7 column 4.

Westmar club to collect Christmas trees Jan 6

The Industrial Arts club of Westmar college will hold a Christmas tree pickup on Saturday January 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. Trees left on the parking areas of each Le Mars street will be collected. If snow disrupts the schedule, pickup shifts to Saturday January 13.

Continued mild spell brings mixed skies and rain chances

Unseasonably mild weather is set to continue through Friday with a 50 percent chance of rain tonight and 40 percent on Friday. High in Le Mars on Wednesday reached 52 degrees with a 23 degree low this morning. Sunshine gives way to clouds as Friday cools into the 40s. The lingering warm spell caps a stretch of better days after October through December's dull period.

REAP and Water Bank Programs Cancelled by USDA

The U S Department of Agriculture ends the Rural Environmental Assistance Program REAP and the water bank program halting new aid to farmers for soil conservation. REAP funded roughly 225.5 million for 1973 with some counties financing up to 70 percent of terracing. Termination cites higher farmer income and a priority list, effective December 22. local notices say the move aims to curb government expenditures amid protests from Corn Belt officials including Congressman Wiley Mayne.

Key 73 Christmas Start Drives North American Evangelism

The Le Mars Ministerial Assn led a historic Carey gym gathering as Key 73 launches a year of unified Christian outreach across North America. From Dec 25 1972 to Jan 7 1973 millions will join noon prayers, with a Jan 7 commitment service and a Jan 6 TV launch Faith In Action.
