Christmas weekend brought cloudy skies and brief clearing to sun Tuesday morning, with no new snow. Temperatures ranged 40 to 15 across days, freezing drizzle elsewhere posed travel hazards, while here roads stayed dry and flurries appeared briefly. Funeral notices follow after.
Five people were injured in a car truck collision on Highway 75 near James late Monday. One person, Mrs. Edward Petzoldt, 58, rural Merrill, remained hospitalized for observation at Sioux City St. Vincent hospital in fair condition with head injuries. Also treated and released were Edward Petzoldt, 63, Hilda Kallsen, 72, and Kallsen’s granddaughters Becky Kallsen, 17, and Donna Kaufman, 17, all of Pierre. State trooper Gary Swanson said a southbound pickup driven by Petzoldt collided with a northbound car driven by Kallsen as she turned left. The wreck occurred at 11:30 p.m., and all injured were taken to the hospital by Community Ambulance Service. The investigation continues.
A daughter named Sarah Agnes was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dick Louvar of Hinckley Minnesota on December 21. The mother is the former Jean Dull. A brother Andy and sister Jennifer accompany the newborn. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Louvar of Cedar Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. Burton Dull of Le Mars.
Readers hail a grocery delivery program begun by VISTA with Hy-Vee and Dreckman taxi serving 18 individuals unable to shop. Joan Alden invites inquiries at 546 7735, noting Hy-Vee covers added costs and will not charge recipients. The Dec 12 Daily Sentinel article credited Mid-Sioux Inc. and Hy-Vee Foods for initiating the service.
A two car crash Saturday near NIPCC corner injured five, including Charles G. Brodie, 86, in fair condition at Floyd Valley hospital. Aurelia family members Betty Dybahl and Byron, Roxanne, and Nannette Becker were treated and released. State trooper Helmers and Sheriff Guntren led the investigation.
Le Mars librarian Pat Coady announced that the city library will add career oriented materials aimed at youth and workers seeking change. The collection includes the National Home Study Council pamphlets listing accredited private home study schools and the Careers series of 292 pamphlets updated periodically, with 236 in hand. Additional items due in January 1973 include the American Trade Schools directory and the College Blue Book with expanded occupational education coverage. The library plans to add funding guides on financial aid soon.
