Plymouth county car ownership rises to 157 per 100 families

Plymouth county shows a rising motorization trend with 157 cars per 100 families as of year start, higher than national and state averages. Santa Claus announces palace hours at Santa's Palace in Le Mars located in the city parking lot facing Plymouth Street. The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce hosts visits before Christmas with hours 3 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 5 30 p.m. Saturday, with the exception of Dec 16. Stores stay open late nightly through Christmas except for Saturday night.

Bitter cold gives way to warming trend this week

After a weekend with many below zero hours, a warming trend arrives Monday with a high near 20 sure, while Tuesday drops back to the teens. A developing southwestern storm may bring snow and south winds. Skies are partly cloudy, low Monday night near zero. Friday’s high was 9 above with a 3 below low. Saturday 7 above, 12 below. Le Mars saw light snow totaling 0.6 inches Saturday night into Sunday with a Sunday high near 1 degree and a Monday morning 11 below.

Fuel problem cases as officials act in Iowa

Gov. Robert Ray announced after a meeting with Office of Emergency Preparedness officials, the Federal Power Commission, and the Interior Department that three steps are being taken to ease Iowa fuel oil shortages. An earlier OEP quota lift on foreign fuel oil imports provides a fall back, gas supplies for corn drying are being explored with FPC gas expert Joseph Solter remaining in town, and governors seek cooperation from major Iowa oil company presidents to boost supplies.

Iowa to receive 77 million in federal revenue sharing funds

Iowa’s first year share of about 77 million will be retroactive to January 1 1972 with checks starting this year. The money is placed in a special trust and distributed to the state and local governments under a three factor formula based on population income and tax effort with most funds usable for property tax relief and not for education or matching federal funds. The local units receive their shares directly and must publish notices of expenditure.

Public swimming hours set for junior high pool week

Pool manager Chuck Larsen announced public swimming times for the week at the new junior high school swimming pool. Hours are Monday Wednesday and Friday 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Albert Thorpe adjutant Wasmer post American Legion reported 141 members in arrears for 1973 dues while membership nears 400 toward a 341 quota. The post plans a children's Christmas party Friday December 15 at 7 p.m. and holds regular meeting Wednesday December 13 at 8 p.m.

Ralph Gabel of the hospital building campaign announces four men named to the agricultural division. The appointees are John Kessenich Jr Ed Lang Elvin Lippke and Larry Ruhland.

Right to life group forms in Le Mars network

A Le Mars right to life committee formed affiliating with Des Moines based Jowans for LIFE. Officers include Rev. Joe Boot as chairman and Mrs. Gerald Manning as vice chair. The group aims to defend the unborn and all life from birth to elderly and will present objective abortion reality programs to inform the public amid legislative debate.
