Tracks Removed After Abandonment In Tama County
The Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railroad plans to remove rails from a long-abandoned double tracked main line in Tama County to cut taxes and reduce expenses. Ties are being sold, with Elberon buyers paying about six dollars per mile for twelve miles of track from Keystone through Elberon to Vining. About 2,700 ties per mile are estimated. The railroad seeks removal within thirty to sixty days and will haul away ballast rock. Rumors say a nearby highway may be built along the grade for the railroad’s buses and freight trucks.

Red Riding Hood Story Origins Linked to Old French Tales
Tit Bits Magazine presents Red Riding Hood as a solar myth linked to a 17th century French collection Histoires ou Contes du temps passe with moral lessons. The volume, credited to Perrault though published under his son’s name, also included Cinderella Bluebeard Puss in Boots Tom Thumb and Sleeping Beauty. Three Pillars in Lee’s Home From Constitution’s Masts
The Leeland mansion at Shepherdstown built in 1820 by Edmund Jennings Lee ties to the Lee family of Virginia. Its three front pillars are said to be the original masts of the frigate Constitution, salvaged after the ship’s dismantling in the Revolution. The mansion, later destroyed by fire before the Civil War, linked to Old Ironsides and later to a mast gifted to Topeka high school via Charles Curtis.
