Bomb kills former Chilean official in Washington
In downtown Washington a bomb blast ripped through the car carrying Orlando Letelier, 44, former Chilean ambassador to the United States, and Ronni Karpen Moffitt, 25, a staffer at the Institute for Policy Studies, killing both and injuring Moffitt’s husband Michael. FBI said the attack likely targeted Letelier, a fierce critic of Pinochet’s regime, with Chilean spies suspected by colleagues. Chilean ambassador condemned the act and requested a full inquiry.
