The Lawton Fort Sill community marks Thanksgiving with a special reason as the Vietnam War winds down. Local casualty lists show 68 men from Lawton lost in the conflict, 6 in 1970 and 1 in 1971, with earlier years listing 3 in 1965 and rising to 17 in 1968 and 1969.
Officials charging two northeast Oklahoma men with three killings and a district judge’s car bombing after a year of investigations. Tom Lester Pugh and Albert McDonald face murder counts in the deaths of Cleo Epps and Arles Self and the bombing of Judge Fred Nelson’s station wagon on primary election day. A separate Osage County count ties Pugh to the slaying of Tommy Edwards. Edwards was found shot in a shallow Osage grave.
Four years have brought blessings to Lawton and Southwest Oklahoma. The column recalls 1967 reflections and notes local gains from a $13 million bond issue funding sewage plant improvements, airport enlargement, street work, and a new library. An emergency board urges President Nixon to seek injunctions ordering Atlantic and Gulf coast dock workers to return to work for 90 days. The four member panel reconvened after a dim prospect of timely settlement and previously recommended Taft-Hartley orders. The Eastern ports strike idled about 45,000 longshoremen.
In New Jersey inmates seized Warden Hugh Vukcevich and five guards at Rahway State Prison. Troopers and corrections officers planned to storm the facility as 11 guards were injured. A hostage negotiator reported the inmates demanded a meeting with Governor Cahill.
Lawton couple Mr and Mrs Ray Boulton towed a mobile trailer to Norman for the OU Nebraska game. They prepared a full Thanksgiving meal in the trailer and planned to reheat and serve it to guests near the stadium before attending the game. Their sons attend the University of Oklahoma.
A hijacker extorted $200000 from Northwest Airlines and parachuted from a Boeing 727 after the Seattle Reno flight. The FBI reported two of four parachutes obtained in Seattle were missing upon landing in Reno with four crew. No witnesses saw the escape and authorities searched Reno International Airport.
Checotah resident Kenneth Ray Williams 25 died in a one vehicle wreck on U S 266 near Checotah. The car, driven by Kenneth D. Waller 16, ran off the road hit a guard rail and a tree.
