A Chinese Embassy vehicle took Chang from a Paris hospital where he had been guarded since April 28 after police prevented him from telephoning the embassy. He left the hospital of his own accord and told French officials of his wish to return to China. Unconfirmed reports say he went to the Chinese Embassy to await return home as Beijing filed a formal complaint. Chang, a Chinese technical adviser in Algeria, arrived recently with others. he had shown signs of distress as he passed customs with blue uniforms nearby.
