Sweden Race to map drug metabolism and side effects
At Karolinska Institute Dr. Bo Holmstedt leads work on how drugs are metabolized and how metabolites cause or modify effects. The team uses chromatography and mass spectrometry to detect trace metabolites in blood and cerebrospinal fluid and studies stable isotopes to avoid radioactivity. They seek links between primitive medicines and brain function, recalling the Caapi plant’s active chemical similar to serotonin.
