Kennedy Shakeup Ends Admiral Anderson as CNO
President Kennedy named Adm. David L. McDonald to replace Adm. George W. Anderson as chief of naval operations on August 1. Anderson’s strong opposition to the TFX fighter model and clashes with Sec. of Defense McNamara reportedly cost him the top Navy job while Curtis LeMay faces a one year extension and remains a key adviser. Anderson weighs a government position, with McDonald newly promoted from vice admiral to full admiral and taking over Europe command duties.
