Lawton High senior wins National Achievement Scholarship
Lawton High School senior Laurie V. White receives a $1000 National Achievement Scholarship for Outstanding Negro Students. Daughter of retired Lt Col. Lloyd C. White, she plans to study journalism and has honors from Tatler staff Afro-American Club and National Honor Society along with Youth Appreciation and Oklahoma Press Association awards. Cynthia Smith, formerly of Lawton Public Schools and Mannheim high, earns the IBM scholarship to study dentistry. She is valedictorian, in National Honor Society and other groups, voted most likely to succeed, and received Masonic Lodge Citizen of the Year.

ROTC Active Duty Scholarships Deadline Set
Cameron University ROTC spokesman announced a cutoff date of April 15 for applications to active duty ROTC scholarships. Open to Army personnel with at least one year on active duty and two years of prior college who are U.S. citizens and hold a GT score of 115 or higher. Policeman Treated After Rock Attack in Lawton
Lawton police officer Terry McDougle was struck in the shoulder by a rock during a disturbance call in the 1400 block of Garfield. After the incident he drove to Comanche County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Trial Scheduled In Slashing Case At Fort Sill
Fort Sillman Grover G. Guyton of B Battery 4/4th FA was bound over for trial by Special District Judge Jack Atkinson after entering an innocent plea to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Victim Isaiah Jones Rivers was found slashed in the upper left chest in an apartment at 2302 NW 38th, police said.

May Trial Due In Beating Case
A Lawton couple faced two child beating charges with one set dismissed in district court on Wednesday. They waived the preliminary hearing on the second set and the case was placed on the May trial docket. The judge cited insufficient evidence for the dismissed charges and a defense motion delayed proceedings since January.
