Law Violated Due To Lack Of Maximum Security Mental Facility
In Elgin, a man with a bird nest on his head and a string of doorknobs around his neck provoked officials by pouring water on himself while in jail. The district attorney says state law requires mental cases to be sent to appropriate facilities, but Comanche County lacks such capacity, forcing detention in ill equipped jails and raising safety concerns. The DA and jail officials call for expansion of the Taliaferro Community Mental Health Center to include maximum detention for potentially violent patients.
