Jerome Lee Gibbons a plebe from Fulton New York left the U S Military Academy seeking to escape a physical test. He crawled into a potato freight car near Jersey City New Jersey and rode for eight days without water subsisting on raw potatoes before being found by three loaders. He had lost about 15 pounds and was dehydrated but survived with careful medical treatment.
