Eisenhower Opposes Deep Budget Cuts Amid Budget Talks
President Eisenhower warned against severe cuts to government spending including foreign aid and national defense, arguing a five billion dollar reduction in the 71.3 billion budget would force major program curtailments. He praised foreign aid as wisely spent for world peace and prosperity and urged possible savings in state-related spending. The briefing followed his Bermuda trip with Prime Minister Macmillan and addressed health, sun, and a cough while noting no Bermuda missiles deal would raise British access to guided weapons.
