Patients Pay Tab for State Prisoners at University Hospital
Oklahoma City AP Patients at University Hospital are being billed by the state for care of inmates and other state patients as the state withholds financial responsibility. Hospital officials say $1,100 daily in medical costs for state patients are passed to paying patients, with charges up to 2 per day for room and 40 cents for labs X rays. The practice began about two years ago after a state attorney general opinion cut welfare funds. Medical care for 1,088 patients from penal facilities and five mental health institutions totaled $400,490 as of May 28. Interim legislative study is being sought to address care for state supported persons.
